I have no idea what to do about this, its disgusting! Last night, Molly had to go outside well, our backyard is "under construction" so I had to take her out the front. I was searching for her leash and Molly tried so hard to wait but couldnt so, she pooped on the floor!! I realized it was my fault and did not plan on scolding her but before I could clean it all up..she had EATEN IT!! This is not Molly's first time to eat poo. We have major problems with her eating it in her crate while we are gone. I have bought the stuff to make it taste bad..doesn't work! I really just want to know why she is doing it when she makes an accident in the house. Is she embarrassed and wants to "get rid of it" or what? Also, her breathe is terrible! Please help

Biff sometimes eats his too - I don't know why, but it seems to be a common thing.

Neither of mine do it...but I did run across some pills in my Dr.s Foster & Smith catalog that make thier potty taste bad (you'd think it would already!). Anyway sorry I can't be of more help. If its a problem I would check out thier website for those pills...maybe they would do the trick.

I understand from my vet that different dogs digest certain foods in several levels. Perhaps some ingredients in her food aren't being fully digested before she has to go, so the poop still smells/tastes like food to her?? I know, disgusting, but then poop always is :~)

Whatever you do, DON"T get the stuff with cayenne pepper in it. There are a ton of products at pet stores to make your dog stop doing it. I bought one type that had cayenne pepper and it was a nightmare. It made Zeus pee in his crate, and have accidents all over the house-after just taking him out and he went! Zeus is the type of boy that will forever be traumatized by having an accident in his crate. It took us about 4 months to get him to stop. :( When i realized that the products at pet stores just aren't that great, I turned to firmly telling him NO each time I would see him do it. It took time, but he fianlly stopped!

I think it has to do with the history of where dogs come from. They are originally wild (to some extent) The reason most dogs eat dung is b\c when in the wild they need to keep their path clear of 'crumbs'. If they left behind their 'sent' they would open themselves up for a preditor. If they eat it then there wouldn't be much of a way to be hunted, also if they are hunting they would eat it so that their prey wouldn't frieghten away by the strong sent that something else is there. Also they will eat it in the home b\c it's their 'den'. It's their way of 'cleaning' it.

Also if you notice a doggie will roll in feces, usually not their own. This also dates back to when they live in the wild, 1. is to 'mask' their sent. 2. is to go to another dog pack w\o being noticed (they will roll in the other packs dung to smell as if they belong with them.

There isn't really a way to stop it other than to scoop it quicker than they can eat it. It's just instictive to them. Sort of like the wolf & cyotee.

Well I'm no expert, but it makes sense to me! :0)
