What are the chances?

My fiance and I are thinking about getting a Boxer, but honestly the health problems scare us. What are the chances of our dog developing a serious health problem? We would of course buy from respectable breeder who tests their dogs and breeds only healthy animals. Would it be the same chances as with any breed?

If you buy from a reputable breeder, the chances are very little. But it is true that boxers, in general, tend to have more health problems. But in my opinion, this breed has too many other good points to let the health problems scare me away. If the boxer is the right breed for me -- which it is -- I personally wouldn't steer away from getting a boxer just because of the health problems. Personality-wise, there's no other breed that compares. I'd rather spend 10 years with a boxer than 20 years with a breed of dog that I "settled" for. But that's just me

I completely agree with this. I've lost a Boxer to brain cancer, my current Boxer male has a few allergies, my female has a degenerative knee problem and is hypothyroid, but with the issues we've dealt with I would still own 50 more in a heartbeat. They've been GREAT with my son through the years, we've had at least 1 Boxer since he was born and he's now 7 years old and they have all been great with him, I absolutely adore this breed and couldn't have asked for better dogs...with or without health issues.

I agree with the above posts. Boxers do have their health issues but if you buy from a reputable breeder that get all the health tests done including the heart test the chances are less likely however every breed has some health issues. My brother had a beautiful 7 month old Newfoundland pup that developed leukemia and had to be put down. Both his other two Newfs had no problems. They all came from a very reputable breeder so there is nothing written in stone. For me the boxer is a breed separate from the rest - hands down. Good Luck in your decision.

Boxer's are addictive!!

We lost our first boxer to cancer and our first reaction was that we didn't think we could go thru losing another one...but soon to our amazement we agreeded that you get more love from a boxer in those years and it's worth every moment you can spend with them...right now Addie who will be 2 in January is trying to eat one of those tree car freshners so there's never a dull moment but life just wasn't the same without one in the house...good luck!!

I appreciate all the replies. It is quite apparent to me that Boxer owners are just crazy about their Boxers, more than other breeds I have researched. I think we might just have to take the plunge and experience the breed first hand.

Boxers are wonderful dogs. I agree with the other posts about getting a boxer from a reputable breeder. We have an 8 yr old female, 11 yr old male and 3 month old male..he's our male's son. Never had any health problems with the older dogs.

I recently lost my almost 11 year old boxer to cancer, but the love and happiness he brought to our family are worth every bit of heartache I feel now. And with a boxer there won't be a day that goes by that he/she won't make you laugh. They are absolutely, without a doubt the best breed ever.

My boxer had TPLO surgery 5 weeks ago, and about 2 weeks ago she developed 2 growths on her back. We hope they are not cancerous :( She is only 4 years old but if you ask if she is worth it we would definitely say YES!! Every day with her is precious to us! She truly enriches our lives We would definitely recommend a boxer!!
