what age did your boxer start getting protective

Harley is just about 5 months old and he has started thinking he's protective... if the neighbors get a little to close to HIS yard, he does a low bark/growl. But, if someone knocks on the door, or if my hubby comes home late... Harley lets out this big howl/bark that sounds like its coming from a big dog. He;s also semi-protective of Trista, my 1yr old little girl, esp if new people are around.

Up until recently Mason only barked or growled when either I was nervous about someone approaching or there was good reason to bark. Since we've gotten Aspen who apparently is going to be "guard dog extraordinaire" Mason is alot more vocal. It's so funny to me to watch Aspen grow and develop as her personality is night and day to Masons. I am always telling my husband " Mason never did THAT when he was a puppy" LOL

My dog is 2 years old and I have never heard him bark at anyone. He doesn't bark at a knock on the door or a car or anything. Sometimes I wonder if he will ever "find his voice". I have had concerns about it, but I have heard that Boxers aren't "barkey" dogs. They guard with their ears. I guess it depends on the individual dog really.

Maddy

Maddy is four and a half months old now and for the first time a few days ago she barked as someone knocked on our front door, woohoo, normally if she hears something suspect she sits up n growls or growls n starts to bark. I'd like her to get to be a lot more protective of me as I've been told there is a boxer thief around and I'd like her to be wary. It'd be good if I could get her to stand in between me and whoever until I tell her its okay but I guess this is just something that will or wont happen.

protective

My bailey boy didnt start till a few weeks ago he's almost 8 months old.. and he'd never done it till my neighbor (who has a bad habit of knocking too loud) came to the door and i was napping on my couch and bailey was too. of course.. haha.. well she knocked and he jumped up and looked @ the door and growled deeply and was doing the 'fake out' w/ his front legs.. most recently and the one that really made poppa proud was 3 days ago me and my girlfriend where sleeping early in the aftenoon and mr. bailey was chillin w/ us on the bed. ONCE again our neighbor came to our back door and knocked.. (she's got an english mastiff pup and them two are best friends ) ... Bailey jumped off of the bed and did a gurgle growl and trotted like he was Mr. T towards the back door, didnt see anything and kept growling and trotted like a superdog toward s the rest of our apartment.. after he checked everything out and nothing was wrong he came back in... it was great.. i think too that he feels not only protective over us and the apartment but also of our guinea pigs.. lol.. our girlie nibbles had babies a while back so we have a house full of them.. it was a nice thing to see.. cause he's such a wimp / daddy's boy most of the time..

bugsy started when we mover

When we lived in a 2nd story apartment. Bugsy could care less who was knocking on the door. We have moved to an area where he can sit and look out the window, also he has a yard to run around in. If he sees anything, a deer, the UPS man, or the mailman, -look out. He's about 10 months now and goes crazy growling and barking. He stops the minute he knows the person is friendly. The UPS guy is finally used to it. Bugsy is harmless, he is scared of moths.

Gunther, 7 months, surprised me the other day. I had my back to him and he was lightly pulling on my shirt. Teasingly I asked "who's that?" and immediately his ears perked up, he took a few steps towards the door and whoofed a couple times. I didn't realize he had picked up on that. I only used it a couple times when someone was at the door. It's just been these past few weeks that he will whoof at the door if he hears something and waits for our o.k. before turning away. I haven't heard him growl yet except when playing.

Rexsmom

Boxer Buddy
Rex is 5 1/2 months old now and he just started his protectiveness about 2 weeks ago. My husband came home from work and he knocked on the door because he didn't have his house key and Rex went to barking. He also hears noises outside and immediately becomes alert and stays that way he knows that that noise isnt goin to harm us. When the nieghboors are out, he stays on alert until they go back inside thier house. He's a good gaurd dog so far. He's really protective of my 2 year old daughter. Her and my husband was palyin and Rex tried to bite my Husband!!! and if someone is carrying my daughter, Rex jumps up on the person to try and get Bailey, my daughter, down. He's realy smart with somethings and others, well he still needs a little work.

My Boxer Leroy started becoming protective at around 11 months. People where a tad scared of him (some pour souls ran, and thats fun for a Boxer!!) Other people where cool with him as he was charging and his tail turned on and it was all fun and games. He goes nuts over the doorbell! he growls if people he doesnt know get to close to me or my wife or my daughter That started when Leroy was about 20 mo. (my daughter is 11 1/2 months) Now people will not even go in my gate they have to call me first!!! Why? Because Leroy now weighs 92lbs!!!! And he is tall!! I have a brindle named dewey who is short and stout. He weighs 65 for now, but leroy makes him look small!
