What about doggy runs?

let me clarify, this may not be what their technical name is, you know the lines/cords you can string up from tree to tree and hook your little munchin up to for a bit.? How do boxers do on these. We live up north and it is getting cold so this would not be a high priority on my list until it gets warmer in the spring, but it is just such a hassle in the morning trying to get ready, feed, walk, and take him to potty all in a short time. What are your suggestions about a doggy run. IF, big IF, we get one he wouldn't be out for long, maybe 5-10 minutes while we finish up getting ready, and not until it is warmer and his little fettsies don't freeze! I am afraid though when he gets bigger that he may be able to break loose. any thoughts?

Dog Run

Hi there:
We put a run like that up for Nora about a month ago. It took a couple days for her to get used to the cable following her around, but she's fine with it now. Normally she will go do her business, then come back up on the deck and bark once to let us know she's finished if nobody is watching out the door. The only problem we have had with it is that twice now she has gotten into something that has given her "PUFFY FACE" and hives all over! Since we weren't right there with her, there is just no way to tell what is doing it, and after one emergency vet visit, and then the second episode Thanksgiving morning (Thank goodness we had extra meds left from the vet visit) I'm a bit wary of putting her on it again. It sure is convenient, but not quite worth risking puffy face again. I wish there was a way (besides allergy testing) to figure out what is doing it to her.

I'd be inclined to call that a mobile tether, rather than a dog run. A dog run is a large enclosed space where a dog can run loose securely (like a really enormous cage).

IF you decide to go that way, please don't leave your dog unattended whilst attached to the tether. Sure, there could be a risk of him getting loose or being stolen, but the biggest risk is self-strangulation. Sadly, that is not at all uncommon when dogs are tethered :(

We have one and both our dogs are let out on it to potty. we watch from inside. It gets really cold and snowy here and the kids don't want to get all dressed to take them out on their leashes. so this way we can hook them to this from the side door and we don't have to go out. Usually it's cold so they are not out there more than a couple minutes. works for us.

We have one for Kosmo. When we first put him on it he wrapped himself around anything in the vicinity of it, the tree, the deck post, etc.
He is much better on it now but we only use it when we are around to watch him. The brand of lead (which attaches to the line) that I bought had different sized leads based on the size of the dog . I bought the one for Kosmo based on how big he would be full grown. Another thing to consider is how long of a lead you want.
As far as breaking free, you should be ok as long as it is installed properly.
We have ours installed from the deck to our storage shed and it is very secure.

Be careful of leaving your dog alone too long in the yard.
I left Kosmo alone for 2 or 3 minutes and came back to a huge hole he had dug in the yard. I didn't really care but hubby wasn't too thrilled

We also have one of these, from the house to the garage. We have attached a retractable leash to the pully thing that slides on the cable. We then attach it to a halter type chest harness. This keeps the lead above her head at all times and keeps her from getting tangled, also decreases the risk of strangulation. It works really well for us, no tangles and easy potty time! We don't put her out without supervision, but for a few min. in the morning. She can also do the burn around the yard without tripping on the lead!

I have one for Mya because i don't have a fenced in yard, and she doesn't mind it at all, she just goes outside to do her business and comes back to the door and barks to come in. Just make sure you get a big one for large animals. Mya's i think is also either 15 or 20ft cord.
