We're getting our new puppy on Saturday

and my husband is freaking out . . . it's been 11 years since we've had a puppy and we both work full time outside the home. Our biggest concern is getting him potty trained. The puppy will be 9 weeks old when we get him so I know he can't "hold it" for too long. I'll be home with him the first week and hopefully he'll get used to his crate, but now I'm wondering if I should just block him off with a gate in a bathroom with newspaper. We're also considering getting someone to come in on a daily basis to let him out.

Any advice is appreciated!

I like the idea of letting someone come at least once during the day for potty break. I would keep one that young in a crate for a while before giving him an entire room. Good luck!

if you go to www.openpaw.org and look on the bottom left corner, there's a link where you can download "before you get your puppy" by ian dunbar. it is VERY helpful and gives you EVERYTHING you need to know before you bring your little one home. it also includes detailed info about the benefits of using a crate and a sectioned off room for when you're not home.

We always kept ours in the kitchen with a baby gate across the doorway, in the crate but left the door of it open and put out newspaper when we weren't home so the pup could come out and play and potty and eat and go to sleep in the crate. The key to potty training is take them out ALOT! I take Diesel out every 30 mins. He's 10 weeks. Good luck with the pup! How exciting!

Congrats on the new Baby. You are getting him at a good age in my opinion. The first few weeks are the hardest. Get ready to be up with him in the middle of the night. Lots of bedding changes.

I like your idea of having someone let him out. Riley is 6 months and I still don't leave her for more than 4 or 5 hours at a time.

Oh a new puppy! so much fun and exciting! and lots of work too--but all worth it!! :) congratulations on you soon-to-be puppy! Being home with him that first week will help alot. With both Gracie and my last boxer, either my DH or both of us were able to take a week or two off so we could get them settled in a bit. I would use the crate for sure, and either arrange for either your DH or you to come home at lunch, or find someone who can stop in once (or twice even) to let the puppy out for a potty break if possible. Good luck! :) Also--if you haven't heard of Bell Training, do a search on the training forum or puppy forums--it really makes housebreaking so much easier! :) Basically you train the pup to ring a bell by the door to alert you when he/she needs to go out...very wonderful training tool and works like a charm!

I am also bringing my new puppy home on Saturday! Congratulations!

I would also go for the newspaper Idea, but sometimes the puppy will pull up the paper and shred it, but make sure that they arn't eating too much of it.

With Louie, I used those puppy pads, but I wasn't gone for most of the day - If I would be gone for longer than he could hold it, I would put him in a Saint Bernard sized crate so he could go and have room to walk around it.
