were can i get melatonin? i am going to try it on my bonnie she still has a lot of hair missing on her sides. the vet. is stumped he says its not mange but doesn't know what it can be, bonnie is in good shape. she started loosing the hair after getting spayed.I was giving her Biotin in her food and vitacaps twice a day and nothing. Bonnie is a 5 yr. old flashy brindle and my male Clyde a fawn is ok no hair missing at all. I been feeding them Pro Plan since they were puppies. I realy don't want to start taking her to different vets as that takes a toll on her and also on me($$) any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks Ray

I got melatonin at my local grocery store. I'm in the south so it's Kroger. Probably drug stores and Wal-Mart (if they've made their way to Brooklyn.) I found that Buster Solid Gold Seameal improved his coat considerably and stopped the hair loss. So you might want to think about something like that

If you go to your local vitamin shop they will have melatonin. My girl was diagnosed with telogun deflux, or as the skin doc says doggy patern baldness. I gave her melatonin for about 5 weeks and she was as good as new. I was warned though that sometimes that does not work and you just have to wait and see if it comes back. My derm vet never mentioned food to me when mokey was having hair loss, so I would maybe just do melatonin or change food, so that if something works you know which one is working for your pup.

I have dealt with this for the last 6 yrs, with my almost 8yr old fawn, the vet said it could be a thyroid dysfunction so we tried thyroxin, I thought it worked then I had to move a couple of years later and the new vet tested his thyroid levels and said they were fine, but she had found with a lot of Boxers that during the winter months this happens and it could be a cause of losing the sunlight exposure basically. Which Chance does start losing it in November and he starts getting it back around late May early June. I had tried Melatonin on him also for a while and it didn't do anything for him. I don't know what else to do except there is one thing she suggested- getting him an ultraviolet plant lamp-you know like the ones the use to simulate sunlight for indoor plants in the winter- and I think they may have them for iguanas and other lizards also....Hope that helps

I am in canada and I got my melatonin from a vitamin store, so you should be able to find it. My girl is about 24-25kgs and she got 6mgs every 8 hours. The vet said she may get sleepy, even to the point of having an accident in her bed while she was sleeping. He said if that happened we could decrease the dosage. He recomended doing it for 6 weeks and if you don't see a difference by then that melatonin is not the solution for your fur baby. I hope this helps.

I am also dealing with this problem recently. I ordered my melatonin online. My vet suggested also adding Omega 3 ad 6 fatty acids. I am also gonig to look into the seameal. My Dog is on Chicken Soup dog food and has been for two years. This spring she started losing hair on her sides and some on her back. She was tested for mange and tyroid and all came back negative. She is almost 5, spayed, and a dark brindle as well. Good luck and I hop something will work for you!

Melatonin for hair loss

I was looking at this thread because one of my boxers has also been losing hair on her sides and her skin is darker/hyperpigmented where she's lost the hair. The vet has tested her for thyroid and it came back negative. He now wants to do a skin biopsy but I'm hesitant. I would go for a skin scrape but I find the skin biopsy a bit much since she seems otherwise healthy.

I am thinking about trying Melatoning but have a couple of questions:
- have you noticed the skin being dark at the "bald spots"?
- is it the same melatonin that's recommended for humans with insomnias?

Please let me know if you have any other advise?

As for kibbles, we have always fed her Eukanuba.

Thank you,

yup it's the same sleeping aid recommended for humans-the same stuff my husband takes when on midnights...You can find it at walmart in the pharmacy section it's in a brown bottle...Chance has dark skin under where he has the thinning hair. But he has mostly the blue skin throughout anywhay, his hair starts to come back in june and stays until like november is about when it starts to thin again.
