Laila started acting really wierd friday night. We had relatives over, 5, and she was happy to play with them and sleep alot on them. Later in the night she wanted nothing to do with me or my wife, and didn't want to play at all. Saturday she didn't want to be by me at all(wife at a meeting), and kept running downstairs and wanting outside. She was really itchy and didn't want to play with me out there either, just play through the fence with the neighbors beagle and didn't want to come inside. I went to work and my wife came home a little later and gave her a bath in baby shampoo to try and help with the itching. When I came home from work I let her out of the kennel and she just ran downstairs, so I let her outside to do her thing. She came back inside on her own but would not go upstairs. I sat down there with her and she finally laid on me but was itchy, had some shakes, gagging some, and was 'snoring' while awake. I checked her skin, it looked normal, mouth looked normal, but her ears were red and it felt like there was a nickel in each one. She calmed down after a bit so I put her in the kennel and called the clinic then got 6 hours of sleep, Laila slept the whole time too. We got up this morning and she had more energy, no 'snoring' or gagging, but her ears were still the same. I took her to the clinic and they checked her out, no mites or anything they could see. She got a steroid shot and some ear drops we are to give her twice a day. She is doing alot better now, running all over the house, but still not very interested in me. Her ears aren't swollen now an hour after the shot and some drops. I have a regular vet appt. scheduled Wednesday for her 2nd set of shots, so I hope she is all better. Sorry for the long post, just worried about my baby.

If she isn't back to 100% I wouldn't get the shots Wednes. Vacs. can have adverse effects on a pup whose immune system is already stressed. The symptoms sound like an allergic reaction to something.....have to changed foods?...did she get lots of extra treats from the family?

Still changing from Alpo to Chicken soup, started doing that on Wednesday. She didn't get any treats from the family and we ate out so they couldn't slip her anything. She didn't have any problems on Wednesday, Thursday, or most of the day Friday besides some occasional direhea(sp?). How long does it usually take food allergies to show?

Hen,

When we switched foods, Ali almost immediately had a horrible allergic reaction. Then we switched immediately again to Canidae dry mixed with Canidae and Chicken soup wet. (I am sure all the switching really helped things and feeding both makes it harder to figure out what it is) Things subsided but she was still ridiculously pink everywhere she has white fur. We kept having to give her Benedryl. When I took her to the vet they thought everything was fine, but she's two and never had this before. I know something is causing this. Two weeks ago I stopped giving the wet all together and after a few days, the redness subsided. She looked and felt 100% better. Which one was it you ask? I am positive it is the chicken soup soft now. I gave it to her all weekend to see what happened and sure enough she's back to being miserable. I am going to try the Canidae wet next after we clear this up. Hopefully that one will be ok.

Good luck to you! I'm terribly disapointed the Chicken Soup wet didn't work. It really smelled good!!

I don't think it was the food, it was only her ears that were red and swollen. She is back to her normal rowdy self again, and her ears are back to normal. The shot and the drops are working great.

This happenned to Asia once ... her ears were full of fluid, hard, and warm to the touch. I raced her to the vet in a panic. When I got there, I was nearly in tears when he asked me if she had eaten anything out of the norm recently. I remembered that I gave her one piece of leftover popcorn shrimp from Red Lobster! After her round with medication, her ears went back to normal!

I am glad that your baby is feeling better! :)
