Super Boxer
Finally today I went to my first dog show!! I've been waiting about 2 months for this show because it's so close to me. Last night I saw one of the boxer breeder's RV go past while at a gas station. That totally "pumped" me up for the show! One of the reasons also I wanted to go to this particular show is to meet a couple of certain breeders I've had in mind. There were 15 total boxers entered. It was a small one day show.

We got to the show site this morning when lots of the people were getting ready to head to the ring(9am). I wanted to see the boxers, rottweilers, great danes, and dobies the most. The great danes were magnificent; it was really the first time I'd been close to one or more. I talked to one great dane breeder/handler and was petting her BIG 15m.o. male and he leaned on me and nearly knocked me over! It was so funny! He was just a giant cuddle bug!

I finally got to talk to the (boxer) breeder I've kept my eye on the most, and they were some of the nicest people I've met! My mom and the breeders(husband and wife) reminisced(sp?) And they actually know each other - small world!:p They asked whether I wanted pet or show and I told them pet, but would love to show in the future. They told me they could give me a dog that was on the border line of being show or pet to see how it would develop. I believe they won Best in Class 9-12 mo. with one of theirs. And the other breeder I've admired a lot told me to come by his house anytime to see his boxers! He lives about 60mi. from me. He won BOB w/ the male he was showing today.

I had a great time and took pics, but unfortunately can't post them b/c I don't have a scanner(plus they're not developed yet!) Sorry if I've rambled too much! Oh yes, and I got sunburnt!

You won't need a scanner to post pictures if you have a cd made when you get them developed. It's only a couple of bucks more, and you'll really enjoy the slide show on your monitor. Many cd's include a download so that you can edit your photos. You can crop, rotate, size, adjust contrast, brightness, color saturation to suit you.

If your computer is fairly new, chances are that it already has a photo program. Even if you had to buy one, they are cheap, and you might be able to find some free downloads with a little searching.

For instance, you might have a really nice picture of your dog's head on a photo with a lot of background distractions. You can crop and enlarge just the portion you want. When you do crop and edit, be sure to save it under a different filename. That way you won't lose the original.

I love dog shows! We first went way before we got Scrapper, hoping to look at all the different breeds and talk to some breeders. I had corresponded with Scrapper's breeder over the internet several months earlier and found her at the dog show and we went up and introduced ourselves and spent a nice morning getting acquainted. We had a fabulous time and I found most all the breeders to be very willing to talk. Like you, at first we were just looking for a "pet quality" puppy, but after a couple of shows, I got hooked. Though Scrapper was "classic" not flashy, he was sold with the proviso that we were going to try our hand at showing him with our breeder's help, but unfortunately Mother Nature intervened and gave him only one testicle. Nevertheless, I still enjoy going to dog shows and hope some day to be able to be a more active participant in showing.

How exciting for you! We have never been to a dog show, but would love to go after reading about your experience. Thanks for sharing!

When you get your pictures developed, ask to have it also put on CD. That way you can share your pics with us even though you have no scanner.

You got sunburnt? Does that mean dog shows are usually held outdoors? I got sunburnt today also from going to a Pet Expo (which wasn't as great as we should it'd be).

Thanks for sharing your fun day at the dog show. Hopefully we can see the pics you took! :)

I enjoy dog shows too! Guess it comes from all those years showing hunter/jumper with horses. I feel right a home.

Finding a breeder by going to shows is a great place to start. Make sure that the breeders you are interested in do all the necessary health testing. Just because they can be lead into a ring doesn't always mean they are quality or healthy.

Where I live in FL there are two venues locally that have dog shows. Thankfully, both are huge indoor convention centers. Most of the shows for agility (Jilly and I are shopping around to start competing) are outdoors around the state.

Paige:

I too went to the show that you mentioned. I only watched
the boxers show but I was in heaven! I looked for you to see
if I saw you but evidently I was looking in the wrong direction.
Anyway, I really enjoyed all of those good looking boxers. It
was also my first dog show but hopefully not my last.

I was also at the dog show....it was way hot for my black pants. I'm just glad the boxers showed early...

My breeder was there and we had a nice visit. They live there in Danville and are lovely folks

I went to my first show this spring in Northern Virginia (I actually had to work as a steward since the show was hosted by the boxer club that I belong to). I too just loved seeing all the different boxers and am looking forward to next spring -- well worth taking a day off of work.
