I got my first "What is that, a Pit?" question this weekend. I was a little stunned, which is suprising, since I *knew* it would eventually be asked - I've read enough on here to know it's NOT an uncommon thing at all. I just shook my head and said, "No, Cash is a Boxer." I then proceeded to hear all about how Boxers were "prone to pimples around their mouths". I explained that when they're fed out of a plastic food dish that yes, it can be a problem - FOR ALL DOGS. No no...I'm wrong - Boxers are prone to pimples. I just changed the subject.

I don't claim to know it all - heck, far from it. In fact, I LOVE to discuss dogs - every time I learn something new, I'm excited and happy. I wish everyone was the same way.

I didn't know plastic food dishes cause pimples. Is that because of bacteria? We have one of those heavy duty plastic ones but I put it in the dishwasher every night when I wash the dinner dishes. Do I need a new dish?

I am not sure that is totally true. My boxers have slammed many meals out of a ceramic plastic dish since Ive had them and never had a problem like that. The cerplastic dishes are less pores and give in to the whole Bacteria resistant dish. Which is most likely another lie to get me to buy it. But I am no pro.

Elsa is very prone to pimples. I was shocked when I first heard about "puppy acne" and I just burst out laughing. But the point is, it's there. I bought her metal dishes, but she still occasionally drinks out of a ceramic one, and still gets some pimples every now and again. I guess like humans, some pups are more prone to it than others. Poor things..

My old man Cassius he is 9 gets at least 2 pimples a week now matter what kind of dish he eats out of I guess he never out grew it.

I didn't know this either... (Thank god they use Stainless Steel)! That's good isn't it? :o How about for other animals??? My cat eats out of plastic food dishes.

Our vet told us that the plastic bowls can cause pimples because of the bacteria.. stainless steel is the best he said.. i dont know.. thats just what the vet said! Id like to find out more about this if anyone knows though!

alright, this is what i found:

Plastic is porous and food collects in the pores. Then, after time, the food decays and bacteria grows in the pores. Your dog might develop acne on his chin from his dirty bowl. This will require a trip to the vet, lancing of the pimples, and a face washing twice a day with an acne shampoo for two weeks. Plastic bowls can be chewed and dumped over easier and some will leach harmful toxins into the food over time. Many cases of "puppy pimples" can be traced to using plastic feed and water bowls. Stainless steel is easier to clean, sterilize and is dishwasher safe

I have ceramic bowls. I can never eat off of something metal (it just hurts my teeth) so I can't let my babies eat off metal either. They have never had pimples.

I have ceramic too it keeps the water cooler so no drinking out of the toilet.
