Boxer Pal
My boxer baby is almost 7 months old, and he's already had a rough go of it. When we got him, he was severely underweight and sick. Poor thing was just bones pretty much. He had a bad round with red mange, and he had several trips to the vet and some INTENSE baths we had to give him once a week for several week. He lost all his hair during this ordeal. He was so pitiful, but he always had a great disposition, bless his heart. Anyways, he's now doing WORLDS better :). He has a full coat and he's eating great, and he's definitely not shy about playing and being rambunctious :). My question is, how do I get him to put on more weight? He is still underweight some, and I'm sort of at a loss as to what to feed him to help him gain weight. I try mixing wet food with his dry food once day, and he loves it. He also gets yogurt once a day (for gas, mainly :) ). We were giving him one scrambled egg a day for the protein per the vet's instructions. Any suggestions??

Many young boxers look underweight. How much does he weigh?
Nutrition plays a role too. What type kibble and canned are you feeding?

Intense baths for mange? Was that mitaban? Wow - that's a pretty severe poison. It may take him a bit of time to recover from that.

Nonetheless, the best way for him to regain weight and condition is slow and gradual. It doesn't do anyone much good in the long run to effect dramatic rapid weight changes (either gaining or losing).

The best thing you can do really, is to feeding him the highest quality food you can. Some supplements in the way of real meat, fresh fruit and vegetables, eggs (already got that one covered), and fish are likely to be helpful as well.

I've no idea what dog food you're feeding of course. But if you want to check on the quality of that, there is some good information on how to choose a quality dry food at www.boxerworld.com/feeding And information on the contents of 600+ dog foods plus ratings and reviews at www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews
