Hi Everyone - Our vet tells me that my 8 month old male boxer has a very weak immune system. He is at the vet every month for a different reason. This time it is pyoderma around his muzzle and his eye lids were swollen with little white bumps. Last month it was dry skin and little sty's (sp?) on his eyes. The month before he was finishing his fight with puppy strangles. Has anyone had a puppy with a poor immune system? Any tips on how to keep them healthy? I feel so bad for the little guy. And he's becoming immune to all sorts of antibiotics b/c he's been on them his whole life. Please help!

I believe there was a thread recently about swollen eye lids/white bumps which were the result of a negative reaction to the antibiotics.

Try doing a search on antibotics and I'll think you'll find it.

There's also dietary supplements like Missing Link and flax seed oil, etc...

A search in this forum should net you all the information you need.

What does your dog eat.....and has food ever become a topic as a potential cause of the problem?

Hudson is currently on Canidae. We switched him from Nutro b/c we thought he may be allergic to the corn/wheat in it. His skin was always dry and he'd scratch it. He's stopped that... so we thought the Canidae was working. I was thinking maybe we should try a hypo-allergenic food??

I'm going to pick up some vitamin c & e tonight. thanks everyone for the great suggestions!

Get some Flax seed too. Works wonders for skin problems. You might want to try a lamb based food. There are several quality brands that come in Lamb and rice. My Molly is allergic to most foods and does wonderful on Azmira Lamb + 1/2 cup of green bean veggie mush in the mornings. I hope Hudson feels better soon!

Have you considered your dog may be allergic to ALL grains? Many dogs are and those who are constantly sick are often sick because of the foods they are being fed.
Think seriuosly about taking him off ALL processed foods and ALL antibiotics for a few weeks and see what happens.
There are so many posts here regarding natural feeding.
You could opt for either cooked or raw.
It may not cure him but I am willing to say it will certainly be a step towards helping him heal.
Constant bombarding of antibiotics just further weakens and already damaged immune system.
Vets just keep piling up and piling up , till the poor dog has no defences left.
Eventually they become a victim of the effects of antibiotics.
So many people dont realise that antibiotics can be a great healer if used in moderation but constant use can also be a killer in the end.

Your puppy sounds very much like he needs a break.
He needs a quiet time to rest and recuperate and he needs the very best food you can source for him.
I am sure you will see a huge difference in him.
Like others have said see what herbal supports your local health shop can give you for him.
Missing Link gets my vote. :)

Thank you Debbie, I will definitely take that suggestion into consideration. I do feel he needs a break.... he's had a rough little life.

I am also in Northern Virginia. I have used Pender Vet. Clinic for the last 20 years and highly recommend. My boxer girl, Molly showed right from the begining hyperallergic reactions [opposite of weak immune] and I was told that this is common in the breed. I keep benedryl handy. I have also noticed that a change in her diet can have dramatic consequences--probably will try some of the suggestions from others about food. Good luck.

lhahne -

we are thinking about moving to fairfax in the spring... if we do, i will definitely check out pender vet. i just went to the website and it looks great. we currently are at clocktower animal hospital, and they've been great...but a lot of times i get the "i don't know, i've never seen that before" answer. which i'd rather hear, then them making something up. we just go get second opinions at that point. :D but i will strongly consider pender vet clinic. thank you!
