I got a white puppy in March and the breeder claimed that only one of the puppies was deaf, due to her crying all the time. When I took Daisy to the vet we found out she is deaf in one ear, we later found out that there was also another one in the litter that had some hearing loss. If you can check with the vet that the breeder is taking the puppies to. Good luck!

Weve asked the breeder to come to the vet with us and get the puppy checked out but she said that they would charge alot and do the same as what shes done ie clicking fingers etc. She also stated that it would be wasting her time as she is sure hes not deaf. This makes me suspicious. She also said that she had a dog brindle and a bitch brindle left if we wanted one of those. But i know if we got another we would regret it as our colour preference is white. Weve decided to take him anyway and hopefully the breeder is correct, so we'd take him next wednesday. Still concerned actually and may be overreacting. its our first pup and i want to be sure.

love him

I dont know any thing about deafness in dogs but i did once have i white boxer who ended up with heart mumer and bad back legs. but i loved him so and you will love yours no matter what, even if one morning you woke up and it had grown green spots you would still love him. and if he does turn out deaf it will just make him that extra bit more special.

You posted on April 1 2005 that the puppies were 3 weeks old. This would mean that you have brought the puppy home now at 6 weeks old?

This is too early to bring home a puppy. He will not be socialized properly and will not learn bite inhibition properly being away from his mother and littermates unless he is with them until at least 8 weeks of age.

Good Luck and make every effort to socialize your puppy, it is imperative. Also didn't someone post that they can lose their hearing up to age 8 weeks?

Yes. most information ive read says 8 weeks is the reccommended time to bring a puppy home but then in other places/books some say after 6weeks? Now everything is starting to contradict one another and can be very confusing.
As it happens my father in law has bought a brindle male from the same litter and we will make every effort to socialize our dog with their brindle and their other two dogs.
At the moment he can hear very well and we hope he will be ok at 8 weeks onwards.
The breeder let all her litter go at 6 weeks. She also stated that if it was the fathers(of the pups) owner whe would have put the white puppys down as soon as they were born.

Well I am happy for you your puppy is not deaf, as for the father's owner, I have nothing constructive to say. Good luck with your pup. If he was going to be deaf he already would be and he won't suddenly go deaf at 8 weeks, just for information's sake.

I don't understand what you said? Something about putting down the white puppies....>????
If you are talking about them just putting down white puppies to sleep just because they are white and might be deaf.... I didn't think breeders did that anymore. So sad.
Well I wish you and your puppy lots of Boxer happy times. I got my baby Chopper at 7 weeks (thought he was 8 wks) we socialized the heck out of him and he is wonderful. He loves every dog and every person he meets. He is very sociable and easy going. Good luck with your puppy and keep us updated :)
