We had to say bye to our brindle baby

Hey everyone:
I just wanted to share my story with everyone, so hopefully this will never happen to anyone else.
I bought a brindle male boxer pup from a breeder in my town in Feb. of 2002. Even though it was against my better judgement I put a deposit on a beautiful brindle with a white collar, well I got a phone call from the breeder and he told me that the pup that I put a deposit on got stolen. The pups were only 5 weeks old. My husband did not believe the man, because the people were not the cleanest people and the mother did not look real good. She was real thin, I mean I know that mothers lose weight because of the pups but she was bad. Anyway, the breeder told me that he could refund my money or give me the only pup he had left which was the runt. So, I took the runt. Which we named him Zeus. He was wonderful but at the age of 3 months, he started to lose his hair and get red bumps on this chest area. The vet basically had no clue and did not know what it was. Well, finally at the age of 5 months, I demanded that they give him a skin scape to check for Demodotic Mange, well that is what it was, but at this time the poor puppy had NO hair and he started to act real sick. He vomited all the time. Well, they wanted to dip him, but was worried about him already being sick. Well, to make a long story shorter, I took Zeus to the vet in the morning of the 24th of June, (6 months old), because he could not walk on his own, and he acted like he was blind. Well, the vet examined Zeus and found that his immune system total failed and he went blind as well as his lymphnodes had swollen up. He told me that Zeus was suffering and there was really nothing he could do for him.
I cried so hard that day, and made the decision that I hoped that I would never have to make and that was put him out of misery. I had to put my baby boy to sleep. My 9 year old son was so heart broken, because he just lost his best-friend and buddy.
I called the breeder and he told me too bad and that he was not going to help me in any way. I was really upset now. I ran into a lady that seemed to have bought the only female puppy from the same breeder and litter of Zeus. Come to find out that her puppy had died the day before Zeus from the same problems Zeus suffered from. So, I found it kinda weird that both puppies from the same litter died of the same thing. Well, I know in my heart that our precious Zeus will never suffer again and that at least the 6 months he did spend on this earth, my family made him feel like he was the greatest dog alive and gave him a great life.

If you find anything similiar on your boxer please request a skin scraping early and hopefully they can control it before it is too late, like Zeus. I hope this story helps anyone that has had this problem or knows any boxer that might show signs of Demodotic mange. Please get it check, it might save you furbabies.

I'm so saddened by your story and your loss. What a horrific thing to have experienced. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Use this site to do research on ethical breeders. Find out about the things to look for and the questions to ask before getting a puppy again. There are a lot of BYB's out there just looking to make a buck. They don't do health testing and don't give a damn when something happens to one of their dogs BUT there are breeders, ethical ones, out there who do care and they care a lot. Please don't let this deter you from ever enjoying the love, loyalty and companionship of a boxer again.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to your family!

Thanks...

Astoreen:
Thanks for your reply to my post. I really do appreciate the your concern. It was really hard, but I had my other boxers to help ease the pain some.
I lost my 2nd son, when he was 7 weeks old due to SIDS (crib death), that has been almost 9 years ago. I will tell you though, having to say goodbye to Zeus, was almost as painful as when my son died.

As you know, when you honor a boxer into your life, you hope that they will be with you a long time, when something like this happens it is hard to deal with.
I would love and believe that I am ready for another puppy, but it is my husband that is not so hot about the idea. He says it is because he knows how bad I took Zeus's death that he would hate for me to suffer through that again. I guess I understand that. See our 1 1/2 old boxer, Rocky has a Grade 5 heart murmur, but you would never know it by looking at him, he is crazy and ful of boxer energy... :p
I know that when and I do say when I get another pup, I am really going to investigate the breeders real good. As I would expect them to do to me.

Once again, thanks for your support, it does get alittle with time, but it still hurts real bad, expectially, when you see a puppy that looks like him.
Thanks alot from me and my family...

I, too, am so sorry for your loss. When we got our 2nd puppy, Willow, she had demodectic mange really bad. But we noticed that something was wrong right away and we have a wonderful vet. She started treatments at 8 weeks old. I am so grateful that she never got as bad as your poor baby. I am glad that you will do some good searching on a good breeder for your next puppy. I love our dogs and wouldn't trade them for anything, but I wish I would have known about Boxerworld before we got them. I know now what to look for in breeders, and I know about rescue.

Thank you also for your concern. How is your puppy doing with the mange? I am so glad you have a good vet and caught it in time before it got too bad. The wierd thing is that it gets bad real quick.
Good luck with your puppy and your other furbabies. Always tell them you love them, believe me they understand you, no matter what people say about dogs not understanding humans, I think they do.. Actually, I know they understand some things..

Willow is finally doing good. She has been off the ivermectin for over a month and it hasn't came back. I'm hoping that it never will. It went away for awhile and then she got it a second time. Dylan also got it when she was 6 months old. Hers wouldn't have been so bad, but she is allergic to the mites and had such a horrible reaction. But she is better now, too. It took us quite awhile to boost their immune systems, but they are really healthy now. And they are all definately loved and spoiled!:D

I am sorry to hear about your loss. It is always hard to lose someone so young. The BYBs breed only for money and the poor dog and their families end up suffering. My Draco was also a product of a BYB & at the age of 3 he had to leave for the Bridge.
Just take comfort in knowing the Zeus is having a great time at the Bridge

I am very very sorry.

I would suggest 2 things- 1. GET A NEW VET!!! the scraping should have been one of the first things they did. BAD VET!!! smashicon smashicon
Also, unfortunantly you have now experienced the true side of a BYB pup. Subi is also a BYB pup and we are dealing with all her issues. When looking for a pup ask the breeder if the do the health testing- checks for hips, heart etc etc. if they dont-- RUN!!! ALso the mother should NEVER look unhealthy. Yes she will be skinny but you shouldnt be able to see any of her bones and such.
I am sorry that you had to go through this tragic ordeal. My prayers are with you and your family
