I have been expecting this for awhile now, but as it does, the time came all too soon. Ray has always had a heart murmur and recently had to go onto heart medication, he was having fainting spells and the vet said he had the blood pressure of a cat, which was a bad thing for a dog his size. He became more his old self again these last 5 months on the meds. He did go through a few rough days where he didn't feel well and would throw up a bit, but after a day or so he was ok again. We did have him at the vet to make sure.

Well this morning he didn't want to take his tablet in his favourite treat, then this afternoon when I got home he seemed to be having one of his spells again, he hadn't wanted to eat much the last day or so either. I had to go out for awhile again, and when my DH and I got back he was just sitting there leaning against the wall, his breathing was laboured and his gums white white. We rushed off to the vet and were told that he wouldn't make the night, he more than likely had internal bleeding probably in his heart, she said she could hardly hear his heart beat. We could take him to an animal hospital with an ICU where they could give him a blood transfusion to keep him alive long enough to make sure that it was internal bleeding and from where, but the vets guess was that they would probably keep him in the hospital and all signs pointed to his heart being the problem. If they could help him he might only live maybe a week or two if we were lucky.

We made the unhappy decision to help him to the bridge. We didn't want him to have to stay in a hospital for his last few days of life, with strangers proding and poking him, and only a very very small chance that they could help him, if any. We stayed with him for about a half hour saying our goodbyes and then stayed with him to the end so he wasn't alone. He would have been 10 next year.

We are going to miss you my funny, happy boy. Run free at the bridge with Tyson and chase as many birdies as you want, there is no more weak heart stopping you now.
