My two yr old boxer A.J has red watery eyes that tear and now he's scratching his hair away. The poor thing has red raw skin that bleeds. This just started this weekend. I noticed the the blood last night. I'm not sure what he's allergic to. I changed his food back to chicken from beef. I have him on Pro plan. I gave him a bath to wash off the flee shampoo, but the real problem is my house is under construction. I have dust everywhere!!!!!! I think that it's dust mites. I would keep A.J outside but he jumps fences.
Does anyone know of a temporary cure to sooth his itch until I can go to the vet?I'm 7 months preganant and It's tuff for me to handle him. I have to wait until this weekend so my husband can take him to the vet.

I know this is not very serious, but I can't help feeling so bad for my baby. Any advise???

As a temporary measure, until you can get him to your vet, you could try an antihistimine like Benedryl to help with both the itching and the watery eyes. Benedryl can be given at a dosage of 1 mg per pound of bodyweight up to 75 mg maximum, and can be given every 12 hours. If it is an allergy, this should help him in the short term and the side effects are pretty much limited to either a very sleepy AJ or a very hyper AJ.

Good luck - hope he feels better soon!

Itching

I had the same problem with my boxer. Brought him to the vet, they gave him prediscone(spelling wrong), changed his diet to veg diet solid gold. Still itching. Bought him to new vet, he scraped the area where the rash is & looked at it under a slide. It's Red Mange & he said all dogs have mange but some can't tolerate it as well as others. He also stated it's a common problem with boxers. He gave him a shot of invermectin(spelling again) & gave us 2 treatments of mitagan dip. We have to apply one now & then one in two weeks. Then we go back to the vet to see how it worked out. I can't believe the first vet didn't do a scraping to begin with & it would have saved my boxer a lot of aggravation from the itching. Ask your vet to scrape the area & make a slide & look under a microscope. Wish I knew this before.
Good luck & hope you find the cause.

Me too.

I'm a vet tech, and in over five years, I've never heard of it. Sarcoptic or Demodectic are the only two types I know of. In all honesty, trying to self-diagnose this isn't going to help. I'd definitely go to a vet. Also, Pro-plan isn't a very good food for the kiddos. It's choc-full of preservatives and cancer-causing agents. I'd not worry about chicken vs. other meats nearly as much as I'd be concerned about getting my hands on an all-natural, healthy food for my pooch. Best of luck to ya. Meantime, Benadryl will help take the edge off his itching, but it is no cure. :)

Thanks guys for all your advise. I washed the Flea and Tick shampoo of the little guy and he completely healed. The hair is growing aback and his skin is no longer red and raw. I can't believe how quickly these animals heal from one day to the next.

I thought that Pro Plan was good for them. OOpps!. I have a problem feeding him. He's very fussy. I have to add Chicken broth and stand on my head for him to eat. I guess my quest will continue for the right food.
Thanks again I'm so happy we have a site like this. Everyone understands how much you can love an animal.

Glad to hear

Glad to hear you helped your babies. I know what you mean about getting the fussy ones to eat. Mine will only eat if I put flax seed oil or a 1/2 teaspoon lowfat plain yogurt or fat free & salt free yogurt on their food. And they say dogs will eat anything HA HA. Well good luck to you & your babies. Maybe it wasn't called red mange just mange I don't know the medical term he used I just asked him to word it where I would understand. All in all the medicine works(for now & I hope forever). Well enough about me as I said good luck to you.

vicki,

once i had a siberian husky, i noticed a very small bald spot on her and took her to the vet, he did a scraping & he said it was red mange. he said one cause of red mange was inbreeding.... i don't want to offend anyone at all or anything & sorry if i do but thats just what my vet said. and again said that was just one cause. needless to say i took a trip all the way to another state to see my breeder!

Thanks for replying. At least I know I'm not losing my mind & someone else has heard of it. My boxer is really so much better just have to keep my fingers crossed & pray. I wish they could talk. Wait I take that back,my two boxers do try to talk sometimes
Anyone else have boxers who try to talk.

oh yeah I forgot

Rajaboxer,

What he said was it's not the one you get in the field but the more common one. Like I said he called it something medical then
when we said HUH! he said a form of mange.
Sorry if I kind of worded it wrong.
