Watery eye

Bella has had a watery eye for a couple of weeks. It was a little red and she would rub it and blink a lot. I took her to the vet on the 14th and they could not see any scratches or bumps. She got a cortisone shot and some eye drops that we were to use for 10 days. It's still watery but not red anymore. She goes back on Thursday to see one of our regular vets. On the 14th we saw a substitute since our normal vet just had hip surgery. Anyone have this problem that just doesn't want to go away? I'm being told they might put her on oral antibiotic since the drops aren't working.

Is it just on one side? Sky had ectopic cilia last year (eyelash growing out of inner eye lid, scratching surface of eye). It's more common in puppies but apparently can happen later in life too. We tried several different drops and nothing helped before we finally went to a specialist to get the diagnosis, looking back I wish I had gone to the specialist earlier since it was very uncomfortable for Sky.
(hoping this is not what Bella has as it requires surgery and was expensive). But maybe you can mention it to the vet. It is uncommon to have a bacterial infection on just ONE side as it usually spreads to the other eye.

I don't think it's allergies because she also gets Benadryl twice a day. The substitute vet didn't seem to think it was an eyelash issue either. But since our regular vet wasn't able to see her the last time, that's why they want to see her again before they prescribe something more. It doesn't bother her all the time and we don't catch her rubbing it that often but I know what it feels like for us humans to have a watery eye and I can't stand to think of her being uncomfortable.

It's either excessive tear production or reduced tear drainage.
Maybe a blocked tear duct? It sounds like the treatment they've given her will help with that. The cortisone shot would help eliminate inflammation that might be causing it and I'm thinking the drops are probably an antibiotic and will take care of any infection that might be the underlying cause of inflammation.

I'm thinking a warm compress won't hurt (if she'll let you) and might make it feel a little better if it's bothering her until your regular vet can do the follow-up.
