Michelle,

A lot of people that I know have simply been making the ribbons/pins/etc. themselves. I went to the craft store and bought spools of ribbon and asembled them myself. If you want, I can send you some of my ribbon or make some pins and mail them to you. Not trouble, honestly.........I have enough ribbon left. Let me know.

Thanks for all the warnings it is so sad that people can use such a tragedy to try and skim people out of money, I would only give to charities I am familiar with anyway

Dear Trishia (sorry I tried to e-mail you privately but I was unable to for some reason)

Your generosity makes me want to cry!!!! Where are you from?? It is so nice to see that complete strangers can come together (it is just a pity that it generally takes a tragedy to make it happen these days!!). I think this event has made everyone change their way of thinking, I know I have done a lot of thinking since September 11.

I am from Melbourne but went to Sydney last weekend for a birthday party. My partner and I were walking through the markets and a man stopped me and asked if I was American as I was wearing a t-shirt with the American flag on it. He was originally from New York but has been living in Australia as an Artist for the last five years. He was so beautiful, again, I wanted to cry from his words (he was quite emotional). He could not believe that an Australian was wearing the American flag as he thought that Australians generally thought of Americans as arrogant. I told him that I love Americans and would always support them. It's funny but it is amazing how meeting a person can really lift your spirits. He told me that I had a good heart and kept saying "God Bless you". Even though I am powerless to do much to help America, wearing my t-shirt and ribbons makes me feel good. Meeting this man made me feel good.

Sorry to go on Trishia it just makes me sad how some people can be so evil when there is so much good in the world. America will live on and fight back against these disgusting human beings (if you could call them human) Australia is behind you all the way!!!!

Trishia could you just tell me how you made your ribbons and I will try to make some over the weekend. I want to use red, white and blue ribbon, safety pins and craft glue but what is the best way to put it together?? Thank you for your kind offer but I could not ask you to do this for me! God Bless.

Have a lovely day Trishia

Thank you

Michelle

Michelle-

Honestly, it would be no trouble to make them for you; however, they are quite simple though, so here goes. Depending on the size of the ribbon and the safety pins, you should be able to take equal lengths of each of the three colors and tie them into a bow. Then you should be able to slide an open safety pin through the knot in the bow. After this, take a glue gun and affix the ribbon permanently to the safety pin. This is the best way to prevent the ribbon from sliding all over the place or from coming undone. Does that make sense?? If you simply tie a bow and then glue the bow to the pin, you run the risk of losing the bow altogether as the glue wears away/breaks down. I hope this makes sense...it's so hard to describe crafty things sometimes without a picture to follow.

Your words were very thoughtful, thank you. I live in Washington, attend grad school for social work/law and work for the Red Cross. I agree with you completely about tragedies making people stop and realize how precious their lives are. It is also in times like these that people really show their true spirit. Unfortunately, being somewhat cynical, I ask myself how long this renewed sense of generosity will last. The Red Cross blood supplies have been seriously low for a couple of years but it is our hope that now we can replenish that supply and build a reserve. Did you know that blood or blood products like plasma can be frozen for up to ten years. There are a lot of recently generous people who've never done this before and we want to keep them "gifting" our organization and others as well. Do you know that the Red Cross is mandated by congressional law to provide service to the military or armed forces like case management and other related services yet we receive no federal $$$. No federal $$ for Disaster Services, either. Sad but true. The only federal $$ we receive is earmarked for the Sr. Nutrition Programs and even then it is not enough to provide for all who need assistance. We do the best with what we have and continue to fundraise and raise awareness about social issues effecting people on a daily basis. I'm stepping down from the soapbox now. Sorry.

Before I forget, the man from the market, I'm certain, thinks the world of you. You said it's amazing how an absolute stranger can brighten your spirits, but did you ever think what you did for him? Imagine what it was like for him to see you proudly showing your support for this country. It is always the little things that really make all the difference. No amount of money could do what you did for that man or viceversa. Make sense??? With that, I leave with you a quote that I keep near me at all times,

"One does not improve through argument but through examples......be what you wish to make others become. Make yourself, not your words a sermon" - Henri Frederik Amiel

Best of luck with your ribbons and thank you for yor undying support. Let me know how they turn out, ok.

Sincerely,
Trishia

Dear Trishia

Thank you so much for responding. It must be very scary living in Washington at the moment! I commend you for the support you give to the Red Cross, congratulations!!! I tried to donate to the Red Cross once but because I had been overseas In a certain time frame I was refused because of "Mad Cows". I have been wondering what screening process was put into place when Americans etc donated blood for the tragedy. What if someone is HIV positive??

Your directions sound easy enough so I will give them a go on the weekend. I thought that the ribbons were like an upside down V. In Australia we have these ribbons for AIDS, Breast Cancer etc etc.

I guess I just wanted the "real thing" from the States but I guess that is a bit silly isn't it?? I will make great ribbons and give them to my family and friends who will where them proudly!

Thanks again Trishia

Oh.........those ribbons. Those are fairly easy as well. Take equal lengths of ribbon and cut them on the diagonal.......you will need two of each color for this one. Then, you can just take one set of the three, space them equally and lightly line the edge of one color ribbon with glue, lay the next color on top, line that one lightly with glue, laythe last one on top. Repeat for the second set. Then, take and criss cross the two sets to form an "x" and put a little glue in the middle of the "x" to hold them together. To attach the pin, try to slide it through the area that you glued together to hold the "x". You'll want to use thicker, slightly heavier ribbon for this one, so the glue does not saturate the fabric. OR, you can take one set of equal length ribbon, cut on the diagonal, and then "fold" in half, criss crossing the ends in the middle and making a loop in the top. Does that make sense? You can then glue this in the middle and slide a safety pin through the area where the glue has hardened. I wish that I could draw for you what it would look like to make it even easier. I could always fax a picture to you in the morning (US time) if needed. Let me know if my instructions are understandable.

BTW, I live in Washington state not D.C. I apologize, I should have clarified that for you. As for your question about HIV and blood donations, the chances for receiving "tainted" blood are slim since they've incorporated a number of technological advances and measures in the past years to screen and test the blood after some cases of HIV transmission occurring from blood transfusions. Donated blood is tested before it's used, so rest assured for yourself as well as others.

Best of luck again!

Take care,
Trishia
