Quick question.......We have a two year old female (Logan) and a 13 week old (Memphis)...I was wondering if anyone has run into any problems with teaching one dog to heal to the right side, and the other dog to heal to the left side?

Any comments would help!!!

I like to walk two like this, on each side :) It's not big problem, but you do have to train them to switch sides, or walk on the side you want, seperatly. Once they have got it on thier own, you join it together with both on them walking with you. I train ours to switch sides - sometimes when walking it's handy if you have to move around things etc..

Oh, I have run into problems, that are my fault - when we are away and I can't let the dogs off lead I walk them on flexi's and have sometimes found one will go one side of a tree, and one will go another, leaving me heading for the tree :p Fairly easily solved with a recall so we can re-group and contine.

Have fun :)

Magnum and I did obedience classes when he was a puppy and he was trained to heal on my left side - and that's where he goes - regardless. He will pass behind me to get back on my left side. All this without any correction or instruction from me - he does it religiously himself - it's uncanny.

Omar tends to stay ahead of us when we're out for a run or walk and he's off towards the right - it doesn't really matter though, because wherever Omar goes, Magnum will reposition himself so that he's on the left again.

Sometimes we get tangled and their leashes become criss-crossed over me  , but we regroup and continue on.

It's definitely do-able. Happy training!!

I agree with Krikkit. Work one dog at a time. And then work them together. Get mastery of walking properly, at your pace, with a loose lead with one dog at a time. Then you can teach them more easily how to be on the right or left side, or split.

I work my two a lot on our walks. Our only "issue" was that Susie INSISTS on being inside next to me. Maggie had to learn that she has to walk with Susie in the middle. Didn't take long to get it down but at first it was a bit disconcerting for Maggie.

We have great walks now. They move behind me to the left or right side on command and split (one on either side) on command as well. Luckily, we lived in an apartment so we took LOTS of walks and got in loads of practice, so it wasn't too long before we were enjoying long pleasant walks, just the 3 of us.

Good luck.

warning about "2 headed" leashes

I recently read a story on the internet about those leashes that branch out into two clips for two dogs. Here's how it went...a man was walking his two dogs on a leash with 2 clips, and the dogs got very excited, one wanted to go one way, and one the other, so they ended up in a fight. There wasn't much the owner could do obviously because they were tied together. I wouldn't suggest using one of those....I know I won't. I never really thought about the possibility of a brawl between two dogs tied to a leash like that, no matter how loving they usually are, fights can always happen anywhere at anytime.

I have 2 9mth old white boys and a gammy leg so balance is a problem.
When training we ALWAYS train them seperate no distractions.
I use the gentle leader, as although both can walk to heal if they choose not to i cannot take them out alone. I walk with both dogs on the left side on seperate leads. Usually Henry the top dog of the pair is on the outside and Diesel is in the middle.
Now i take them for a walk instead of the other way round.
You have to find what works for you and your dogs.
good luck
