Walking... or not

I have been taking Chloe on short walks - down to the end of the street and back. However, getting her to go is another thing. She will just sit down and look at you. Once I get her started - she will go about 20 feet and then sit down again... all the way to the end. On the way back- she wants to run the whole way - so I jog back with her.

I am using a small flat collar with a 6' lead - but I hold all except enough for her to go about 2' behind or in front. When she walks - she doesn't pull - she is either right beside or just behind me (well she sometimes walks through my legs:)). When she stops - I stop, but I totally ignore her - there is a small amount of tension on the leash - but I don't pull. When I feel slack - I start walking like it never happened. Is this the best approach?

Since Sunday was her first time on a leash - will this just get better with time?

My pug use to do this when he was a puppy. When he would sit I would call him and encourage him to walk, and he would. We would also practice on the leash eaither in our home, or in a quite area. I would also watch him, and just let him drag the leash aorund so he would get use to it. He eventually got use to it. kirby had this problem I htink the first 2 times we started walking him, after that he just got use to it! :)

She the worst about it in the house, although it is getting better - I will try the letting her run around with the leash on.

Our puppy was doing the same thing and I am using the same collar and lead. I got her to stop for the most part, we have only had her a week now. I keep the walks short, and hold the lead at the same length you are holding it. I have started stopping before she has a chance to and asking her to sit. We do this before crossing every street. When it is time to go I say "Gretchen come" (really excited)as I pick up the leash and step forward. That helped alot. I do not let her run home though. since she is eager to go that direction, I make the most of the forward motion and trying to keep her at my left side. She still slips and goes between legs also. Good Luck. Stay the course and baby will get it figured out. They are so much fun arn't they!
