I'm not really trying to teach him heel (Kirby's 10 weeks). But here is the thing he walks wonderful on my right no tugging, close to me. If I try to get him to walk on my left .... he pulls and wants to go back to the right side. Get silly bites at the lead.

How long\ how old should I let him (get away with?) walking on the right?

I know we always teach them to walk on the left but I don't know if its a rule! My hubby walks our rottie on his right because he has a sore shoulder. A lot of left handed people walk their dogs on the right that I know. See what other people think. Maybe Dan will shed some light on this.

It does not matter what side your dog walks on - just do what suits you :) If you are going to enter obedience competitions one day, the dog will need to 'heel' on the left, but heeling is different to loose lead walking.

I train my dogs to walk nicely on both the left and right hand sides, and to heel on the left. For loose lead walking I also prefer them a little out in front of me rather than beside me.

It will be fun for you to train your pup to walk on either side :)

Here is a thread with info on the left hand side thing:

Im having problems just getting my pup to walk on a leash period. As soon as I attach it to her neck she sits down and stops. She wont come when I praise her, or for treats. I tried gently tugging on it and she stays firmly planted to the terra firma. haha ANY help with this would be appreciated.

Shotze's Mom, we are having the same problem with Harley! He will be 13 weeks old tomorrow. We've tried him on the leash a few times... He mostly has run of the yard and I try to leash train him ouside of the yard (so that he knows he needs to be on the leash when he leaves the yard) But he just sits there, or he'll grab the leash and pull on it... he wont step off of the driveway though!

Any Help?!?!

Blue does the same. Once he puts on those breaks, there is no luring him to walk. What do you do if the dog wont move? Even if they do not come to treats??? I hate to go over and pick him up. It sends the wrong message I think!smashicon

My pup use to not walk on his leash (just sit there) or take off. What I did was, when he wouldn't walk, I would turn away from him and say, let's go and walk...if that didn't work I would turn and talk away from him...if that still didn't work, I would walk and they will eventaully join you. When they do, give a happy good puppy and then a treat. I use to feel like I was pulling him down the street but he eventaully caught on.

When Titus takes off, I turn the other way and walk the opposite direction. Yes, it looks funny when you are walking down the street to turn every 5-10 yards but it works. When the turn and come with you, give a good puppy and give them a treat. Funny thing now, when we walk and I say, good boy he looks up to me for a treat!

Clover walks well with her papa, but not with me (she is only 10 weeks)...She pulls on her leash and tries to squirm out of her collar - but when Dan (her papa) walks her she runs right beside him, and doesn't pull what-so-ever! Dan say's it because I expect her to walk with me, and when she stops I gently tug on the leash to get her going again. He does keep the leash pretty loose! What am I doing wrong?!

It's probably the tugging on the leash - a dogs (or puppies) oposition reflexes will kick in. Take plenty of small, tasty treats with you on walks and when she is walking nicely beside you give her a treat. Keep the lead loose. It's always better to work with them, then against them :)

There are heaps of threads here about walking on lead - a forum search will bring up lots of posts with lots of good ideas for you to try.

Good luck :)

Mya is another pup that puts on the brakes when she is leashed. IMHO, training them to walk on the left side is for show dogs. I am just happy to have her at my side.
