Walking 2 while alone..need some tips

They weren't old enough for obedience class when they "graduated" their puppy kindergarten class, so they repeated pup kindergarten , NO they weren't left back and had to repeat I wanted a consistant training until they could go to obedience. They start that class in early July..or is it late June?? Anyway, they did touch upon "heel" and my kids were ok w/it..but together they are hell on wheels

The problem with a short leash for them and thinking they can't get at each other is..I am 4ft 10 inches tall..not too far from the ground myself and they CAN get to each other..and if they can't they tangle up in my legs..trip me..do whatever they can to "attack" they other..its

Tomorrow we'll try one on each side..w/the harness..in the yard

Donna - haha you're tiny! But..., mine are just about 100% of my weight combined 2 weeks ago Brewster weighed 57 and Adrienne 35, so I know they're more now.... I'm sure the two of us with all 4 of our pups would be a hilarious sight! I always get comments from people when they see me walking them..."you better hope they don't take off running!" etc.

My Boo and Ms Cotton pulled like a team of pack mules and acted just as stubborn they also were bad about playing tug with each others leashes. A friend suggested I starte training them with the Halti (like a gentile leader). It took some times to get them in the hang of wearing it and they honestly never did enjoy it. Eventually, when they both would keep it on, I connected them together with a copular so not only did I correct them with a little tug but they corrected each other and learned to walk side by side in front of me. I eventually got them to heal together on the same side. After a few months I started just using the coupler and eventually separate leashes. I think at the time Ms Cotton was a year old and Boo was about six, your babies are so young they will need some extra time. Best of luck and have fun.

First you are going to have to teach them separately to walk nicely on a leash. I would suggest you walk one on one side and one on the other. Be consistent as to who walks on the left and who walks on the right. Once they both walk well separately, then you can attempt to walk them together. They need to understand that they have to walk nicely together. You might try practicing in the house and in the garden before attempting to tackle the streets. As soon as they get into a squabble a loud ACK, might stop them in their tracks. I would tend put them both into a sit until they settle down and then try walking again. It may take a lot of work, but it will be worth it in the long run.

I'm glad someone started this thread. I want to walk my two together but I've been scared to try. I can walk 75 pound Aphrodite pretty easy using a harness. Skynyrd, who's 55 pounds, is not leash trained. If my DH walks Aphrodite with us, he walks great. He's a follower so walking him alone isn't easy. I'm 115 pounds, so they definitely outweigh me. I think I might give it a try anyway.

I walk my two by myself all the time. I don't really have any advice though because they both came to us as adults and have always walked very well on lead.

But they do seem to know that if they really want to go somewhere when I have them both they can. They just take off in unison and I have to plant both feet firmly on the ground and not move or I'll go where they go. They weigh almost as much as I do. They don't try this stunt when I just have one of them so I'm sure they are taking advantage of my disadvantage .

The other night we started off after dark and at the end of my driveway I discovered several rabbits were frolicking around the neighborhood. Freya's just crazy over rabbits and Odin was willing to give chase too. I hope no one was watching becasue it took me the entire length of the street to get them back under control! We were all tangled up and I was tripping over them and they were tripping over each other. It had to be quite a sight!

I used to get so jealous when I saw someone walking peacefull with two dogs.
First of all Chevy is 63 pounds would never heal. In class he was a superstar but at when we take him for walks he get so excited that is was hard to control him. On the other hand Louie who is 72 pound heals perfectly. One thing that worked for us is using a halti. Took few days for them to get used to it but now they are fine with it (Chevy sometimes triese to get it off with his paws). Anyways, one problem used to be when they saw another dog and we weren't going to go over to say hi, they would jump on each other and start barking and growling. Now when they wear the halti and I see another dog approaching I hold them a bit tighter and we don't seem to have that problem anymore. Both of them combined weight more than me but with the halti I have complete control over them.

That's what i do, they both have their own sides and stay there (theoretically) If they start behaving like muppets I say ACK and stop until they calm down.
I can generally tell if I'll be able to do a double walk or not. If they're acting like loonies I take one of my children with me (hubby doesn't do dog walking after a hard day at work )
One of my arms is definetely longer than the other now though, Lola's side funnily enough
