Can anyone shed some light on my predicament please?

I've got a 5 month old pup and people have told me not to walk him too far given Boxer's are partial to weak hearts?

How far is safe for my pup?

"Partial to weak hearts" isn't really accurate. The boxer breed is affected by two main heart conditions which are genetically inheritable - these are aortic stenosis and boxer cardiomyopathy. If you purchased your puppy from a reputable breeder, then your puppy's parents should have been screened for those conditions prior to being bred. The chances of your puppy inheriting such problems are thus reduced. Also, your vet should have picked up any heart murmers present when giving your pup routine examinations alongside his puppy vaccinations. If nothing has been picked up, then I don't think you need to worry unduly.

With that said, you do still need to be careful about how much exercise you give your puppy. Really, a puppy should get all the exercise it needs just from playing. Prolonged exercise can be damaging to their still-developing joints and should be avoided until your pup is around 18 months old. Taking him for walks is more about socialisation than exercise. Short walks of 20 minutes or so should be fine, but if it's longer than that you need to be careful to ensure your pup takes plenty of short rests.

Cheers for that - didn't want to overdo it with him. He gets a 10 minute walk (without his lead) every evening. Then at weekends when I take him into town (on his lead) which takes approximately 15 minutes he does seem to get thirsty. That's why I was worried I was overdoing it.

Thanks Again

Hey Cody - You won't believe this - but I was out at the weekend and came back late on Saturday evening and lo and behold there was Bud sitting at the front door waiting on me.

Now keep in mind that I keep him out the back of the house which is surroounded by a high fence and a closed gate. However, with the high winds we're experiencing here at the moment the gate somehow came loose and he decided to go walkies alone. Next day the little boy next door came round to tell me that Bud had walked round from the back door to the front door and tried to get it (that's when he closed my garden gate) PHEW.

so i agree with ya when you say to take him out and about so he knows his roots :)
