waiting on results of having bump aspirated

Hi all, Gunther had his lump tested last evening. The Vet said she saw graininess, but this appeared more "around" the cells than the cells themselves. So, she sent the test samples to a pathology lab to test further. I don't know what she meantby gaininess. Does anyone else? I tried to get her to give me her thoughts of what she thought it was (cancerous or not) but she sort of danced around that. If is not cancerouse, she thinks it should still be removed. Do any of you have thoughts on this? Must it be removed if it is not cancerous? Gunther is nine years old now. thank you for your thoughts on this.

Once you get the test results back from the lab, you and your vet will know exactly what you are dealing with and be able to decide on a course of action. You can't pre guess, so although I know how hard it is to sit tight and wait, that's all you can do.

Personally, if the vet is recommending that the lump is removed, then I would go with it. The thing is with these lumps is that they tend to keep growing and can often ulcerate and bleed. Boxers and lumps are not good! Then there is always the possibility that some lumps can become cancerous at a later date.

If it is the age of Gunther worrying you, please try not to. My own Boxer had cancer surgery around about the same age, that involved a huge skin graft too. She did just fine.The vet will take extra care and precaution when anesthetising an older dog, and he will be in expert hands.

result is in and it is a MCT

Thank you, Marion, for your kind words. I received a phone message from the Vet saying it is a Mast Cell Tumor. So, I'm going to spend some time now reading this forum and other sites to learn what I can about this before I call on Monday to work out a plan of action with the Vet.

Sweetie, I am with you all the way..Do your research, it's what I've always done with my Boxers. Sometimes I swear I know more than they do, but as our babies can't talk, we HAVE to do it for them.

I don't want you to panic at the word Tumor..I've had two Boxers with the same thing, one lived till she was 13 and a half, and I still have my precious Millie aged 13. Millie had more radical surgery at 9 than Poppy had at 5, but they both had long lives afterwards ..Millie is living out her silver years and hanging on in there. Trust in a good vet, that's vital, do your research, and never be frightened to ask questions. My opinion, for what it's worth is what I said earlier, get the lump off....You and Gunther will come through this, I promise..Sending you so much love, and hugs for you and your sweet baby. Xxxx

Definitely have the lump removed, with wide, clear margins! Your vet may recommend additional treatment. You'll have to wait and see what she says. Prayers for a positive outcome to this!!

Ask for a copy of the pathology report so that you know exactly what type of MCT you are dealing with. Without knowing all the specifics you can't make a well educated decision.
