Whenever Phoebe drinks a large amount of water (which she always seems to do everytime she drinks), she almost inevitably pukes a little of it up and usually a little food with it. This seems to be happening almost daily now. I've tried pulling her water up for a few seconds to let her "think" about how much shes had and then i'll place it back down and let her continue with a bit more (just an attempt to slow the intake down). She rarely goes for just a couple laps anymore, seems like she always drinks alot at one time. And if we're playing, its all over, i almost have to take her water away or all that bouncing around will definitely cause problems. Phoebe is 14 weeks old. We would really like to hear some advice or anything, this is starting to get really old with me. Also, she seems healthy, very active and lively, the vet has seen her about every 2-3 weeks and has said she looks good.

If they drink an excessive amount of water too fast, it can cause vomiting.

Some other things that can cause excessive thirst is thryoid and diabeties. While she could be a little too young for diabeties (I don't know how common it is in younger dogs), her thyroid level could be out of wack. A blood test will determine this, and it would need to be a T3 & T4 test.

I would get your vet to do a blood test as there is a lot of things that can cause excessive drinking. My boxer who has kidney problems, and has gone through phases of drinking way too much and he too would puke some up afterwards. But you cannot take away their water as they are drinking that much for a reason. So I think a trip to the vet is a good idea.

Good luck

Amaya will do the same thing after she has been exercising or running around. She seems to get so thirsty and her tummy cannot handle all the cold water. There was a post about this awhile back which addressed this.

If she is drinking a lot after exercise I wouldnt be to worried but if she is just for a little drinky maybe you should talk to the vet.

Rayna does this too.....If she is playing really hard at the dog park...she dunks her head and drinks alot of water and runs around....she throws it up too...I happends alot when we take her to the beach.....i guess water and excitement dont mix

i think its normal when they are playing really hard and are excited.....maybe you should try to feed her a little earlier...before she plays....thats helped alot for Rayna

Thanks for the replies, I've been paying more attention to her eating/drinking schedule the past 2 days and things are better. We dont feel like she is drinking excessive amounts, but we do live in missouri, its been 90+ degrees the past week and 70%+ humidity, so that doesnt help. We feel like she drinks normal amounts, she just gets so excited she dives in and doesnt want to stop. I've been making her calm down before having much water and we havent had any problems the past 2 days. We'll keep an eye on her and see how it goes.
