Vomiting water.....

Hi everyone! I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Recently, Sumi has been throwing up water. A few minutes after she drinks water, she throws it right back out. Sometimes, during the day, she throws up a little bit of clear liquid.

Just recently, I switched her diet from BARF to Wellness Lamb meal kibbles. The switch is meant to be just temporary because we are in the process of a complicated moving process. Could something about the food change or quality have caused this?

The one thing that is encouraging to see is that Sumi is not lethargic at all. She is very active and playfull. She doesn't seem to be in any pain by touch or act. She also doesn't have any problems with eating. In fact, she seems to be more hungry after the food switch. And, her stools are solid and regular.

I'm hoping it's nothing serious and hopefully you guys can share some similar experiences with me. Thanks.

When she throws up, is it only water that comes up or is there food in there as well? Also, is it any time she drinks, or is it after exercise or eating?

Throwing up water after exercise or excitement isn't uncommon. What helps is to let the dog cool down before allowing it to drink (a hot or excited dog commonly gulps a lot of water to cool itself down, and sometimes that causes it to throw up).

If it's after eating, one would have to suspect the water mixing with dry kibble (which then expands) is the cause - and I'd be inclined to either feed her smaller, more frequent meals or else go back to raw.

If it seems unrelated to food or exercise and is any time she drinks, I'd consult a vet.

It's pretty common if they drink too fast or too soon, especially after exercise.

Sometimes there are little bits of food with it but it's not a considerable amount. Maybe a kibble or two. When we used to feed her raw, it would be a rare occasion we would see her drink water. I used to even wonder if this girl even knew where her water bowl was. Ever since we switched her food, she drinks a lot more water. Usually after we come back from walks. Also she is not the type to go and quench her thirst with a few slurps of water. When she does drink water, she will be there for a while to the point that I will notice the unusual length of time. I wouldn't say that she throws up only after our walks or after she eats. There has been occasions when she would be napping and she would get up, walk around, and throw up what looks like water.

I'm definetly planning on taking her to the vet but I really got into the habit of checking this board before I walk into a vet's office. The amount of experience and knowledge on this board really prepares me on expectations at the vet's office, well, at least enough to know if I should get a second opinion before I open my wallet to them. Sometimes when I walk into the vet's office, I feel like I'm taking my car to the mechanic. The original cost is rarely the final cost. When you think that the problem has been fixed, it's far from it. We have been victims of misdiagnosed problems that cost us the life of a loved pet and a lot of money. I still remember a while back when Max and Sumi were still puppies and Sumi got an allergic reaction that had her whole body swollen and I hurried to the vet and was just worried to death that it might be something so serious........ They charged me $35 for an office visit without appointment, $30 for a shot of Diphenhydramine HCI , $15 dollars for 5 pills of Diphenhydramine HCI. $80 later, I come home and check this board for similar experiences only to find out that the fancy name of Diphenhydramine HCI is nothing more than Benadryl. I paid $45 dollars for benadryl and didn't even get a whole packet of 24 tablets.

Ok now I'm just rambling off the subject..... But I guess I just wanted to make it known that I really appreciate a board like this..... Thank you all.

If she's essentially just vomitting up water, then it probably is the water that's the cause rather than her food (or the water mixing with her food).

It is normal also for a kibble-fed to drink a lot more water than a raw-fed one. Raw food itself contains an amount of water, whereas kibble is almost completely dehydrated - meaning that not only does the dog get no water from its food, but that it needs to drink a bit in order to digest the food.

With all that said, the amount your girl seems to be drinking in one go isn't really normal. I would suggest a smaller water bowl to limit how much she can consume at a time, and only reasonable refills. That would also help to let you know exactly how much she is drinking.

A trip to the vet is still a good idea. One possible reason for her drinking so much could be kidney problems, and you really do need a vet to rule that out.

No chance of a return to a raw diet?

If Tae is very thirsty, I must limit her water intake. She is famous for drinking too much, then vomiting it back up. I leave her with only a tiny bit of water during the work day. As soon as I get home, the first thing I do is give her water. If she gets too much, up it comes....usually on the carpet! LOL

Oh, I'm definately putting them back on the raw diet. Right now we are in the process of selling our house and moving so I had to clean our freezer and refrigerator for the move and since I get all of our meat from our local co-op, I will probably have to wait another month before I could put in my order and get some RMBs for Max & Sumi. Up to this point Sumi has never been fed kibbles. Well I take that back. She ate kibbles before we brought her home. The funny thing is that she loves her kibbles....

Chloe will vomit water as well. She is healthy otherwise, but due to the fact that she lived in a pet store for 6 months, her water consumption was severely limited, so whenever she sees water she goes crazy and drinks way to much at a time. we keep her bowl with only a little water at a time and she is fine.
