It's been awhile since I've been on here, as we all know how much time a puppy can take!! :) Our new guy, Xander, is beautiful. He is such an old soul, for a four month old. He's excelling in his training and fits in wonderfully.
He is being crate trained, and although he's not crazy about it, he goes in. We only use it when he has to stay alone ion the house. If it's any more than an hour (it seems) he barfs up pieces of his food in the crate & on the floor. This poses a problem because 2 days a week he is in the cage for the full day, with only one pee break about half way through. Then yesterday when I was outside picking up the poop, I noticed three vomit piles in the grass. I started thinking about it and he also has woken me up a handful of times by vomiting (last night was one of them & once last week). I'm not sure what's goin on. I have him on Nutro Natural Choice - Large Breed Puppy and he get Nutro Puppy treats. Every morning I give him half of a small size Denta Stck, because Jacob (my old guy) gets a large one. I'm arranging for a vet visit within the next few weeks, but I'm looking for any advice in the meantime, or any stories from puppies who have gone through this. My worst fear is that it is seperation anxiety, because where I live there are no doggy daycares. Any ideas??????

A trip to the vets is definetely needed there could be problems. Harley has a bent esophagus and vomits alot he is supposed to have his dishes lifted he vomits if he drinks alot of water and runs around. When Foreman was in his crate we didn't feed him or give him water in the crate, are you feeding in the crate? Harley will also throw up when he has treats like dentabones or greenies because he swallows them rather then chews them into little bits.

I'd suggest trying him on a better quality food (something with more meat and less grains in it) that should be more digestible. And ditch the denta sticks for a while also (those sorts of things are notorious for causing tummy upsets).

If he is vomiting up bits of food undigested, then he's having trouble with digesting it. If it was just stress, you'd be getting digested food (ie. in liquid form). Plus, it's not just happening in the crate - it's happening at night, during the day when he's outside as well. A better quality food is certainly something worth trying.

Xander does not get food or water in his crate. He has breakfast at least an hour before he goes in. As far as the milk question, every morning I have cereal and when I'm done I'll put it on the ground for Xander & Jacob to drink the left over milk (which is only about 2 tablespoons). Might that have something to do with it? With the food, I thought I was feeding him a relatively good food. Can anyone suggest a better food at a semi-reasonable price?

Milk is something a lot of dogs do not tolerate well (particularly cow's milk). Lactose can be a problem, as can allergies. That said, the usual response is loose stools, not vomitting solid bits of food ;)

There are many better quality foods out there than Nutro. Canidae is one food that may suit better that I believe to be very reasonably priced. Blue Buffalo is another. But there are plenty of other good options as well.

There is some good information on how to choose a good quality dry dog food at www.boxerworld.com/feeding No food can magically be any better than the ingredients used to make it, and that page tells you what to look for, what to avoid, and why. With the information there, you should be able to make a reasonable assessment of any food you look at.

And for information on the content of over 600 different foods, ratings and reviews, that can help you to choose, you could take a look at www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews

I agree with gmacleod, it might be as simple as changing the food. When Nestle was much younger we fed her some horrible food (pre boxer world knowledge) and she would vomit a little almost every day but as soon as she was on better food the vomiting stopped altogether. Now I can switch her food for different protein sources and she doesn't have the slightest problem :) She's been on Canidae, Solid Gold Barking at the Moon, Eagle Pack Holistics Anchovy, Sardine, and Salmon Meal, and Fromms Four Star Duck just to name a few. Good luck!

Ruby used to throw up a lot, at least several times a week. Switching foods made little difference. Trying to minimize gas, we started feeding her yogurt every day with her kibble. Yogurt worked well in minimizing gas and pretty well stopped the vomiting. Plus Ruby wasn't a good eater and the yogurt in her kibble encouraged/s her to eat.

We purchase the large container of non-fat yogurt and it lasts about 2 weeks. A small price to pay for her improved digestion and our convenience.

we went through this with Moe. It started at about 4 months. He would throw up all the time. We couldn't get any weight on him and it got so bad that he would throw up and pass out. I was sure I was gonna lose him. After lots of money and tests we now give him california natural canned. Dry food comes right back up. NO TABLE FOOD. And watch what went in his mouth. No dog bones or treats. Frosty paws is fine and yogurt. Gastrologist (boy was I surprised they have one for doggies) said to keep him on the calif. Natural or innova evo and he should grow out of it by 4 years old. I would start with your vet. One that works with boxers know what to look for. Hopefully it will be something that can be fixed with food changes.
