Vomiting after eating ice cubes...

I thought there would SURELY be previous posts on this topic, but I did a search and came back with "no matches"...so here goes...

We used to give Legend ice cubes all the time when he was a puppy. He loved them! When he heard us getting a glassful of ice from the freezer he would come running. Inevitably, we'd drop one and he'd get it.

About a year or so ago, we noticed that he would vomit right after eating an ice cube, and we stopped giving them to him.

Well, this morning, I'm filling up my glass and sure enough, one hits the floor. He snatches it and runs off. Before I can get to him, he's chomped it up and swallowed it. He IMMEDIATELY gets up and starts heaving, then vomits on the rug! Does anyone else's dog do this? I did a search on the internet and the only thing I came up with were very vague instances where deep chested dogs sometimes vomit if they eat ice or drink very cold water, but gave no reasons.

Thanks!

I think it upsets their tummy to have something really really cold in there. I remember posting about ice cubes a while back and seem to recall people saying that their dogs would throw up too. Unfortunately, you can't search "ice" because it has to be 4 letters long ;) . However, I think it's pretty normal!!!

mine too!

My Morgan does this also after eating ice cubes. We finally had to stop giving them to her. She will also throw up if she drinks to much water(especially if it is cold). I have also always wondered why she does this.

If you do a search for ice* (* is a wildcard) it will bring you results.

Quinsi is a big time ice hound. When ever I get him water I put ice cubes in it and then fill it up with cold water from the ice/water dispenser on the fridge. He doesn't seem to have any ill effects and he will easily eat 4 or 5 pieces of ice at a time.

Ping eats ice, especially during the summer.. and we also put ice in his water bowl when he is hot. And he LOVES snow cones! LOL... now its cooling off though, but he still likes ice in his water and he loves Sonic ice. :D
He's never vomited thank goodness!

Duchess LOVE ice! You can't fix a drink without her standing beside you waiting for a piece. You can just toss it over your shoulder usually and she'll catch it. LOL It's never made her sick before.

Yes we found this out too--Skye just started throwing up when he eats one--it took us a couple of weeks to figure this out foundicon --no more ice cube cookies for him:(

I'd started giving ice to Jasmine since she was a puppy, Sophie too. Never a time goes by when I get ice that there aren't 3 dogs waiting for ice. Sophie has even figured out that when i get a cup that ice will follow, unless I trick her and get water instead. I've never had a problem with any of them vomiting.

Worst part is when everyone is sleeping I'm deciding how badly I need ice. I don't want to disturb them when they are sleeping because they will get up!

Roxy is an "ice hound" also. Especially in the summer when it is hot out.
She will sit and look at me with 'those eyes' until I share my ice with her.
Haven't had the vomit problem with ice, but have noticed if she gulps alot of water sometimes she will throw up :(
I am lucky though, she seems to always let me know if she is feeling queasy
she will pace around kinda panicky until I let her out :)
