I currently work in a nursing home and know first hand how much the residents LOVE dogs to come in. Most of their four legged friends come in with a resident's family member but we do have a few people that bring their dogs in every month or so just to visit. You wouldn't believe how a shy, timid person reacts with dogs but not with people. It brightens everyone's day. I have yet to bring Oscar in because I believe he is way too hyper. He can't even handle people coming to his own house...non the less, going to someone else's. The last home I worked in had two resident cats and a small dog which I believe was a yorkie or something of the sort. I have not seen a boxer visit but I think that's because they are scarce in my area. But I've seen St. Bernard's all the way down to toy poodles. I think as long as the dog is trained to listen to your commands they are ready to enter the homes. I also believe that dogs have a sense for people. They just "know" that someone is frail and weak and not physically able to "PLAY". Good luck, I know the residents will love you!

I think this is a wonderful idea. Lexi tends to growel at strangers and feels the need to approach them and to not be approached at home. She seems timid but not as timid when she is out walking...but Baxter is truly a love bug in the worst way lovicon and I think he would be great with this. The only problem is that he is blind...do you keep them leashed while you are there. As long as I can guide him in a strange environment he does great and really loves attention. I think I will check into this too! Wonderful post.

Yes they are kept on a leash and by your side at all times. Missy woud go crazy  if she was let loose. As stated most of the residents love the dogs coming in but some are scared of dogs and don't want them near. We always ask "Do you want to pet the dog?"
