If your vet doesn't want to respect your wishes regarding ACE, and he/she can't come up with an alternative of her own, I think it's time to search out another vet. Boxers don't have to have a history of heart problems...just the possibility that there could be a problem using ACE should be enough to totally dismiss any chance of it being used.

tiggersmom,
as an alternative to ace for sedation, i think they can use alprazolam (sp? it's the same as xanax i think) or diazepam (they use this to control seizures, too). my bf took diazpam before his wisdom tooth extraction (he has anxiety issues) and this stuff mellowed him out good.
i would never have known about this ace business if it hadn't been for this forum. we are so lucky to have this resource.
i have a feeling if you go into the vet's office with tons of reference info, they won't fight you. good luck.

Thanks,

My vet said she would be open to discussing anything regarding alternative health care for my dog. I told her we personally don't take a lot of meds, we typically treat everything with herbs, supplements and natural remedies. She was cool with this. I really don't forsee a problem, but it never hurts to be armed with facts!

I am glad to see you aren't going to let the vet tell you what your dog needs. Not all vets know that ACE is just not worth the risk on boxers. Some are not even aware of the reaction potential with the Boxer breed. I had to call 5 differnt veterinary clinics to find one that would respect my wishes that ACE not be used on my dogs for anesthesia when I take them to get them neutered and spayed. They even told me they just do not use ACE so that made me feel better.
Just for information's sake ACE has also been linked to bad reactions in some horses. Personally I don't want any of my pets to have it if there are other options available.

Best of luck with that. I love that so many people we so quick to try to help prevent a possible tragedy. This is a great forum.

I hope all goes well with the X-rays!

Boy, am I relieved. I have to admit I was really slow on the uptake. The title said, "Vet wants to put Lexi to sleep", I feared the worst.

As I read the first post about Lexi, I thought it strange that a vet would want to put a dog to sleep for a possible joint, tendon, or ligament problem.a

I followed the thread, but was still puzzled. You see, my first impression was that the vet wanted to euthanize Lexi. I'm so relieved to find out that I was stupid. It isn't often that one is glad to be stupid, but this is one time I am and can smile about it.

Indy and Ava send their best vibes, and a speedy get well to Lexi.

You don't need to feel alone Thomas. I thought the same thing you did. It took me reading through all the replies twice before I realized what they were talking about.

I've been reading the information on the board for 3 years now and I've learned so many things, from Ace to the kidney bean.
When ever I see someone with a boxer, especially a puppy I tell them about Ace and the boxer board.

Vet's asst Called me today

She seemed very concerned about the ACE research I told her about on the phone. I even shared all of the NO NO NO warnings and antedotal stories from all of you. She said they would definately not use ACE on Tigger and they would try and do everything with no tranquilization. If they truly need to they will use Diazepam.
I just want to give all of you who have been so gracious to send me private messages and links to ACE warnings a big cyber hug!!lovicon

Sincerely,
Jodie and Tigger!

I had to take my new Boxer, Sasha, to the vet last week. We have had her for two weeks now, adopted her from a rescue. One morning, she was out playing in the backyard and somehow got a foxtail in her ear. I took her to our vet and he had to sedate her. When my boyfriend and I went to pick her up, the receptionist informed us that the vet used ACE on her. I was quite shocked to hear this. Jason, my boyfriend, asked if they knew they shouldn't use ACE on boxers and she just laughed and said they used a small amount. I don't know if the vet had read up about ACE, but I have to take Sasha in tonight for a recheck and I am going to bring in a paper about it. I don't want any other Boxer, or deep-chested dog for that matter, to have this. When we took Sasha home that night, she was acting like she was tweaking out, like she saw creatures coming from out of the walls. It was quite strange and I didn't know what to think. Have any of you had your dog given ACE? If so, how did they come out of it?

Tigger had her X-rays today...

It looks like moderate hip displasia and a bad knee. The knee is so bad (an odd shaped bone and knee cap) that it might require surgery. The vet was so good when I took Tigger in this morning I signed the release papers and wrote NO ACE in Bold letters on it. I asked them to try her x-rays first with no tranquilization and if she would not lay still then I consented for Diazepam to be used. Tig did so well they did not have to use any meds on her!!!appicon
When I went to pick her up the vet showed me every x-ray and went over them with a fine tooth comb showing me everything good and bad and really took the time to educate me. Then we discussed our next options, we have to go see an orthopedic surgeon to get a second opinion. We discussed natural and alternative therapies as well as conventional ones. I left there really feeling empowered and part of the team!
So please keep my little girl, she's only 2 yrs, in your prayers. We are believing for no surgery!
Thanks for following the thread, listening and helping me go through this. My husband is not real supportive on this issue. I had a stressful day and I'm glad it's over.
