Lexi is a 1 year 4 month old female. She has been perfectly healthy other than some occasional scratching. The other day she went out for the last time in our fenced in yard, when she came in she would not go up the steps or jump up on the bed. She didnt appear to have an injury. The next morning she was very lethargic and appeared to be in a great deal of pain. We took her to the vet at 11am. By this time she perked up to be almost herself again. The vet gave her a thorough exam and only found some tenderness with extreme hip range of motion. He wants to put her asleep and xray the hips. She really had a rough time with the anastetic with being spayed and I dont want to chance it. The next day she was pretty much back to normal. He gave her some Rimadyl. I did notice a spot on her rear paw that was extremely tender. Looked like she may have got a big splinter in it. I cleaned it out and pulled SOMETHING out of there. I think this may have been the problem. Would the hip thing come on all of a sudden like this if she has displasia or something. She has been up until this night of what ever happened in the yard extremely active with jumping and running. Not sure whether to go through wih the xray or not. Thank you. BILL

Displaysia probably wouldn't be an overnight change. If she did something to her back or strained something in her hind legs that of course would be sudden. Sometimes the only way to get decent xrays is while the animal is under sedation. Not saying anything bad against your dog but when they are on the x ray table and there are strangers making them lay on their back and stretch their legs just so and then hold still, it's too stressful for many pets. Did you ask your vet if he could try to get the xrays done w/ out sedation or did he say that was the only way? How has she been doing since you took whatever it was out of her paw?

I had Kailee x-rayed last May, as she too had bouts of unexplained lameness and soreness, this was her 4rd episode in a year. She would not climb the steps was lethargic etc. I have had an aprehension of any anthestetic since we sent our previous male to the Bridge, and my aprehension became quite appearant to the vet (new city, new vet) after some questioning by him, and I must say some excellent reassurance after he realized my buried fear, all went well. They used valium to sedate her, and she came home showing no signs of ill effects from it. Kailee was diagnosed with muscle spasms, I was happy to find out there were no bone issues involved, and I have to tell you, the valium they used to sedate her for the x-rays did wonders for her. She came home the same day in much better, more relaxed state. Some anti inflamatories took care of her problems, we limit her exercise, as this appears to be a chronic issue with Kailee, and to this day we have had zero problems.
It is necessary to mildly sedate them for x-rays, as stated in a previous post. I wish you all the best.

We are going through the Hip Displasia thing this week too Bill. I took Tigger in today and they did the external exam and on Fri they are doing x-rays. My dog laid very still and did not squirm so they are only going to give her a single injection of
Acepromazine 10mg/ml to relax her muscles. This will help them stretch her out on her back and also allow them to do a deep tissue exam into the muscle to check for ligament damage. The Acepromazine will not knock her out, just make her real relaxed. The cost is $19.50. Perhaps your vet can do this instead. I told them I do not consent for them to knock her out.

if i'm not mistaken, you should avoid using Acepromazine completely in boxers. i don't think even a small dose for sedation is totally safe. there are other drugs your vet can use to sedate tigger. you can do a search here, and you'll find a lot of concrete information.

Please read these threads/links, and do a web search if you still have doubts. It's a controversial drug, and frankly it's just not worth the risk to use Ace on a boxer. The final choice is yours, but if you're not willing to let your vet sedate your dog, are you willing to let them use a drug that carries such a high risk factor? Tell your vet to use an alternative medication.

I bet she will tell me that this is the lowest dose and it wil be safe because my Boxer has no history of heart or seizure problems. So I want some antedotal stories of healthy Boxers getting a low dose, etc. I asked them to do the x-rays with no sedation and if she absolutely needs something to please use something else. What else is out there they can sedate with?
