Vet question

I'm happy to report that Suki is healthy, vaccinated and ready to start puppy classes. Having lost my Cai to bloat, I've become...uber worried about the new pup...her health, food, her heart. I worry, I guess. I worry I missed something with Cai, and that's why she died...even though, honestly, there was nothing I could have done. But with the pup, I don't want to miss anything again...which brings me to my question.

I used to have a vet that I LOVED. He loved dogs as much as I do, and he enjoyed seeing my guys, no matter how scared they acted. He loved up every animal that came in that joint. And we connected, chatted about life and animals...it was awesome.

We moved. So now, I've gone to two different vets. Maybe three (hard to remember). Today's vet visit is at our latest vet, who also works with the rescue we're a part of. The tech was great...all into the puppy, had no problem answering my questions, asked a ton of questions...great customer service personality. Then we met with the vet.

I've seen this vet before....I thought I liked her. But I could see her get annoyed with my questions. She did not like that I said I researched stuff on the internet -- which I get that it annoys doctors when we try to self-dianose...but it's a tool, and people are going to use the internet. I asked things like vaccination schedule and where she stood on the life span of certain vaccines, if I could get a script for heartworm, as I have three dogs and have to purchase it economically, if Suki's heart sounded good and how her hips were. Yes, I had a lot of questions. But isn't that sort of what they are there for? I could feel her annoyance, and she started backing out of the room -- she was in the room for less than 15 minutes. When I mentioned sedatives for my other dog that they see (she's the one with nail clipping anxiety), she talked about sending home ACE. My warning bells went off, so I told her under no condition do I want Suki ever given ACE. I could feel the resistance from her, but she dutifully made the note.

Am I nuts here? What happened to the vet that loved up on your pet and had time to answer your questions? I swear, I've had vets who seemed to value a client who wanted to do the best for their dog, and was worried. Yet the last two I've had...I've felt like they didn't know a thing about boxers themselves -- which is fine, as they see so many different breeds -- and that they were annoyed that I had questions. Um, hello, if it were a human child, you think I wouldn't be just as annoying?!

Overreacting? Or should I look for another vet?

Find a new vet. I would not put up with someone who seemed annoyed by ANY question I asked, especially if they'd only been in the room for 15 minutes!!

Pain in the butt, trust me I know what you're going through... I spent a few years going to different vets (probably 5 or 6 during that time) before FINALLY finding one that I LOVE only 8 months ago. So you can imagine how many questions I had by that time  We were in that room for at least an hour, probably closer to an hour and a half. I actually made HER late for her next appointment (which I found out later) but not once did she cut me off or indicate that my time was "almost up." She never got annoyed with my questions, even after telling her that I use the internet... A LOT. :D She answered all my questions very thoroughly and gave me several treatment options for each issue we discussed, and never pushed anything. She was also very understanding and more than cooperative with all of my "special requests" for Creek's surgery (which we scheduled about a month after that first visit).

So hang in there... you CAN find a good one!

You might try what I did to find my vet -- I looked online at local business review sites like kudzu and yellowpages. I was looking first for a hospital with AAHA accreditation, and reading customer reviews second. I narrowed it down to 3 clinics and called them with some basic questions (cost of an office visit, prices on various tests/procedures, and a few other things... can't remember) and I got a GREAT feeling from only one of the 3 receptionists I spoke with, so I set an appt. with that clinic and couldn't be happier with my experience.

Only one downfall with this place -- they're 45 minutes away from us (unless there's traffic, then much longer). :( BUT for the quality of service/care we get from the staff there I am more than willing to make the drive. My dogs are worth it. :)

I used to want a vet that had a terrific bedside manner with my pets. Things changed. Then I started to realize that I didn't NEED someone to fall all over themselves trying to impress ME by making a fuss over them. What I go for is a great clinician. After that I want someone who understands that I know my pets better than anyone else. Better than a textbook and better than a prescription pad.
While it would be nice to find a combination of all of the above I am a realist. If it happens, great. Bonus and good for me and my pets.

Cami's regular vet had been treating her since she was 6 months old. As I learned about Boxer issues I made sure to let him know what I understood and what I needed clarification on. I am FULL of questions regarding anything medical. It simply amazes me to learn about anything medical. I love to research. It came in quite handy through the years. Our relationship grew to me feeling comfortable with calling and leaving him a voice mail if he wasn't available. I might say something like "Hey Dr. X, I was thinking about such and such and wanted to get your opinion". "If you think I am way off base please let me know why and what direction you might head in based on these symptoms." He would graciously say if what I was thinking was nonsense or had merit. When I wanted a specific test done (thyroid panel for instance) he would say...."NOT necessary but I know you want me to run it anyhow!" When I was right about something he would THANK ME for being such a great advocate for my girl. Other times I might bring something to his attention that he had not heard of before. He would be up front and honest and admit what he didn't know but would always tell me he would see what he could find out. If he couldn't he would send me to someone that could. I am going to MISS that relationship and how easy it was to have him for a vet. Since losing Cami I won't be able to walk in that place again. Has happened in the past with other vets offices. If one of my babies passes away I just cant go back......got off track there!

The internet is a great tool to utilize however I think *some* vets feel threatened by owners using it for fact finding missions. Let's face it. A ton of things online are just opinion based and not always backed up by science.

Nothing saying that you can't continue your search for the perfect vet-fit.

Good advice, gang. Thank you. I think I will probably look elsewhere as I'm not sure how I feel about calling in and asking questions. They are very close to my home, but at the same time, we have quite a few around here. :) Maybe I'll do a little interviewing.

If you don't feel comfortable for any reason or feel like the vet isn't listening to what you're saying, I would find a new vet.

That being said- I work as a nurse in NICU and we HATE when parents come in and say "we're going to do this, this, and this....because I saw it online." Most of the time it's "info" found from blogs/wikipedia/opinion sites/etc, not actual medical information.

But, I've done quite a bit of research online about Johann and thyroid issues. My vet encourages patients to do their own research (they give handouts to all new patients about good websites for finding out info). She doesn't always agree with me, but is always willing to at least listen and discuss it with me.

I agree, you should find a vet that you are comfortable with. I'm changing vets because I feel my current vet really isn't listening to me. I mention something and she just seems to shrug it off. I live with my dog, I know when something isn't quite right, and I want to be taken seriuosly.

Just wanted to add, that when I talk to the vet about things that I've read online, I make sure to do so in a "non-threatening" way. When I bring up something taken from the internet, I follow the statement by saying that I know you can't believe everything you read on the web ;) and then i ask for her professional opinion on the matter. Even when I talk about something like ACE, I try NOT to override the professional's opinion with my "internet hype" by telling them that they are wrong; they may be right about it but I am not willing to take the chance and don't feel comfortable giving it to my dog. I want to do what's best for my dog without insulting the professional that I'm seeking advice from.

Caney - I agree. And I admit...I'm a little over the top with Suki, because I lost Cairo to bloat, and she was on drugs for her sinuses for years, and not a single bit helped. I paid thousands for surgeries for chronic nose issues, yet every vet kept saying they just didn't understand it...and prescribed another pill. Poor dog had little medicine bottles lined up on the counter, and we didn't see a whit of difference. I regret now that I didn't have more information or more knowledge, but I did what I could with what I had at the time.

I guess what bothered me is the vet's obvious annoyance at my questions. She literally was backing out of the room. I don't expect a lot of time with the vet, but I do expect them to answer my questions honestly, and I always try to convey respect and acknowledge that I'm a detail person -- because I know that can be annoying. but I asked SIX questions relevant to boxer/dog health.

I'm just frustrated over the experience because they work with the rescues I support, and I've taken several of my rescues there. But I want a vet I can speak honestly with about things, and while internet research may be annoying and out of sync with reality, it's there, and people are going to use it. Better to have honest discussion and clear the air of any misconceptions, than to be bothered by it.

I appreciate everyone's input. I'll keep looking around. I'd still recommend this vet, as they do a lot for surrendered/rescue animals.

I would also find another vet..
I hate when I feel like i annoy someone.. so the way she acted is not professional at all, especially when you consider the price you pay! ;)

Look around, read reviews online..

I was going to the same vet for 6 years until I heard some pretty messed up things about the vet office.

One of my friend's boxer came back with eyes full of blood after a teeth cleaning last september. That same night, he had a seizure. They went to the ER and it showed that the dog had all the signs of choke. He had a trace of thin hair missing from all around his neck. Did they chocke him? The seizure continued... the next night, ER again and they saw a brain bleed, maybe caused by a fall - did the dog fall off the table during procedure???
HORRIBLE!
Poor Expo didn't live to see christmas last year :(
And weirdly, the vet clinic didn't put any fight to pay all those ER bills. So we all know something went wrong, they won't admit it, but it sounds pretty obvious, otherwise they would have never paid the ER bills.

Also, the same vet office mistook my dog's ACL tear for bad hip - even with x-rays - during 9months!

I cannot trust them anymore.. so i went on looking for another vet...

I found a nice vet clinic, voted best of our county for 2009. They are opened until 9pm at night, which is an awesome bonus!!! cool2icon

If it were me, I would call up the old vet, explain the situation, tell him where I've moved and ask for a recommendation. Maybe print up a list of vets in your area and ask if he knows any of them. They network and gossip like regular doctors, I would think.

I did the same thing with my dentist and chiropractor and got great recommendations. It couldn't hurt. Good luck!
