First off i want to say hello to everybody. I at this time do not own a boxer but in the very near future will own one. I had a few questions since this is will be the first dog i owned personally and not owned by my parents who paid for eveerything i just played with it. I have a few questions on what could i expect to pay for vet visits. Like how does shots and all that cost wise affect me. Just an average number yall pay each time and how many times in a year i would need to go as long as the dog stays healthy. I know this seems very noobish but im just so excited on my future love and i want to make sure i can cover the cost without trouble. Also any tricks/tips for bringing her home. I plan on feeding him the canidae line of dog foods. What could i purchase in advance to help him out with this transition.

Hi wantaboxer09 -

Welcome to Boxerworld :)

Please take a second to post your Introduction (in the Introductions Forum). This is required of all new members, and should actually be your very first post. www.boxerworld.com/rules

Canidae is a great dry dog food! You'll want to transition the puppy over slowly from what they are currently eating at the breeder's. You'll definitely need a crate, some chew toys (a kong?), etc..

As far as vet bills, it's really impossible to say. If you purchase from a reputable breeder that health tests both sire and dam, the odds of dealing with genetically inheritable diseases (that are common in the Boxer breed) is much much lower. More information on the tests that your breeder should be performing on his/her breeding stock can be found at www.boxerworld.com/health_testing

Hi! You have come to the right place...I am a new boxer owner and I found the info on this website to help tremendously before I got my baby. I have had Layla for two weeks now and she is definitely the new love of my life, shhh...don't tell my husband (you can check out my member gallery to see pictures)

My suggestion is to use the search function for the following:
1. crate training
2. socialization
3. bell training
4. house breaking (what to expect and when)
5. night time
6. confinement

Also, do you already have a breeder picked out? Make sure you are very careful about who you get your puppy from. I would make sure they are associated with one of your local boxer clubs. Also, you will want to download an article called "Before you get your Puppy". I can't remember who it is by, but it's fantastic for new puppy owners to get ready for what to expect in the coming months and years.

Most of all, just don't expect too much too soon. Baby puppies are much like real human babies and need lots of care and attention. They don't really "get" house training until 5 or 6 months and even then they can have 'accidents.' Also check out the 'picking your puppy' thread on the forum section.

Good luck with your new baby!

sorry! One more thing, look to spend a couple hundred on your new pup in the first few weeks for shots, food, a bed, crate, toys, etc. Over the following year, look to spend about the same as time goes on...

I paid about $135.00 for her first vet visit when I brought her home. Since then my husband and I purchased pet insurance...you may want to look into it.
