My pup is now 5 months old and very territorial. He thinks everything in the yard and within his eyesight is his. Will growl and bark at everything that disturbs him. My question is this will he grow out of this or can I do something about it? Also when we are out amongst other people and their pets and if they get too close to myself or my children he gets very protective and this happens only outside of the yard. When we are around him in the yard hes a big baby, only barks when we play with him. Please anyone give me some ideas. Thankyou

sounds like he is getting to big for his britches. maybe you should start the nilif (nothing in life is free)method. make him work for everything he has including his toys,food,treat or you. you could just make him sit for everything for now until you teach him other things like off. down and recall comand.
Our pup started becoming territorial around that same age. She began barking at strange people outside the yard & acting like she owned everything inside the fence. I was told that pups around this age can de-socialize very quickly, we started taking her around more strangers & she's doing better now. She still showed herself to the telephone repair man, but he came into her yard unannounced- atleast she's a good guard dog !!! LOL

Yes, Jan Fennell's book is definitely worth a read. You've got an adolescent boxer there, and that book will not only help you to recognise issues but give you the tools to deal with them.
As a general note though, it sounds as though the problem is a mix of your pup being an obnoxious adolescent, and needing a greater amount of socialisation (so that things and people won't be such a concern to him in the first place). How about enrolling him in some obedience classes? That will give him quite a lot more socialisation alongside giving him an opportunity to use his brain more. A tired dog is a good dog - but that actually means mentally tired, not just physically

Great Progress Today
Well today we went to the lake and he showed alot of change. There were so many people around and a few other animals and he didnt make a sound. People were comin by askin to pet him and he let everyone without even a hickup. I was so proud of him. Tommorrow we are going to the pet store for more food so we will see how he reacts there. btw thankyou all. I have ordered the book. I cant wait to get reading it.
