Hi,

My 15 week old fawn, Molly, developed really swollen eyes about a week ago. Took her to the vet immediately and they thoroughly checked out her eyes. There were no scratches or other problematic signs on/in her eyeball but her lids were incredibly swollen. The intial treatment was steroid/antibiotic drops in case she got some sort of irritant in her eyes. Two days later they were worse and she developed an abcess of sorts on the right eye lid. I took her back to the vet and they suspected mites but could not detect them on the skin scraping (hard to scrape the skin of the eyelid!). So they sent us home with oral antibiotics and antibiotic ointment (omited the steroid since it could be inhibiting the immune response). The absess started draining and her eye isn't AS swollen but, that is relative because they are still pretty swollen. This morning I noticed there were some reddish bumps on the inside of her ears as well.

Took her BACK into the vet today (this is the 3rd visit in a week) and they are now suspecting allergies. I recently switched her to Innova from Iams. She really likes it but, it does seem to corrilate with the time her eyes started to swell. She also LOVES these chicken tender things that are like chicken jerky and are very natural but, I heard that chicken can be a big food allergen. UGH! The whole food allergy thing is such a nightmare.

So I bought California Natural Lamb and Rice formula which bascially only has lamb and rice in it. So I'll see where that takes us. She is on an antihistamine/steriod/antibiotic as well. She otherwise acts fine, is still rambuncious and plays. Her eyes just look horrible!

Has anyone experienced a dog with swollen eyes that had a food allergy and was successful in pinning the affending food down? We also have a lot of Pine tree pollen around. I suppose that could be it as well????

Thanks in advance for any input!
:)Bonnie

food allergy

Hi, I'm Tara my 4 1/2 mo old boxer is allergic to chicken......Which I found out recently that is common in boxers, anyways he also had very swollen eyes and little red bumps along with hives. My vet takes care of around 40 boxers, and suggested that I use benedryl (childrens dose 25 mg) which worked great for the hives and swolleness. I cut all new foods out completly and after the allergy reaction passed, started him slowly on new foods, 1 new food per week so i would now what food was ok.

Hope this helps you out.
PS if hairloss accompanies this reaction dont be to alarmed, this can also happen with an allergy.

Hope your baby is feeling better soon.
