Hi guys and a specal thanks to all of you who responed to my last question it has really put me at ease. Anyway here is the next question. My 5 1/2 month red boxer called Shankley after Bill Shankley the old Liverpool Football club manager (I'm from england in-case you haven't guessed) goes absolutly mad when someone comes round to the house. She gets excited when Joanne or myself come home, but it's nothing compared to the visits of someone else. What I do at the moment is hold her down and tell her to sit when she has calmed down a bit she is allowed to be petted. At the moment if she does jump up it's not to bad because she is not yet all that big, but give it another few months and she will be knocking people over. Am I doing the right thing in holding her in the sit position or is there some better advise out there

Thanks

Mike

Yes, what you do is 100% correct. Hold her in the sit position and tell people not to pet her until she is sitted and calmed down a bit.
My Tina is the same when someone comes to our house - she gets very excited and happy, thanks God she doesn't jump on people, she's just running around them and kidney beaning. The only problem with her when meeting people - she would start barking if they don't pet her immediately. We use to say her NO and sit her down, and don't pet her until she shuts up, so she understands this is not a very good behavior of hers.

Yes, I think you're doing the right thing. Boomer has an absolute fit when anyone walks by, drives by, or knocks on the door. It's part of the boxer's protective nature. When we have company, Boomer settles down very quickly. The main problem I still have is he gets too excited when I come home from work. He practically knocks me down. Good luck to you with your puppy!
