The good news is that Roxie has already been spayed (October 04') and she is up to date on all of her shots so we can focus all of our attention on getting rid of these awful mites. Thanks again to everyone for your support, it's nice to hear so many encouraging words when I feel so helpless. I will keep everyone posted.

We have battled localized Demodex in our female a few times. It's usually only one big spot (not several) but it is very frustrating to say the least.

As Cheryl mentioned, you may talk to your Vet about Goodwinol - that has helped us quite a bit. In addition, just make sure she is on a very very good diet (either Raw or premium kibble) to boost her immune system as much as possible.

Who made it sound like she may need to be PTS because of demodex?
Avoid that person! I volunteer with rescue and we've never had a dog not recover! By the time they get to us they are often completely hairless, bloody, scabby, oozing creatures that you can hardly tell are boxers.
The whole process does take a few months before you will get back a clean scrape. Our vets that see many demodex dogs don't even do a scrape until after at least 4-6 weeks, because they know it will come back positive still.
Another thing we do at the same time is boost the immune system with supplements and vitamins. It's a long process, but so amazing when you see the stunning changes.

My Ruby was just recently diagnosed with demodex

My RUby (6 month old) was just recently diagnosed with demodex mange. The vet had mention that it is more active in Boxers even though other breeds also have it. From all that I read it will take time to cure. My Ruby has taken antibiotics for a week, has a tick collar on and gets baths with this special soap that contains sulfur. So far she has lost a good bit of hair but only has 5 or 6 spots but there is alot of thinning everywhere. She seems fine, just goofier looking. Take care and best of wishes with Roxy, she'll be fine.

I have a 10 month old puppy who was diagnosed with demodex mange on March 7th. Our vet immediatly started her out on the maximum dose of intervemetin (?) for her weight as well as an antibiotic twice a day. A few days ago we took her back to the vet for a check up and he informed us that there has been no improvement (in opinion it has gotten slightly worse). Roxie was originally misdiagnosed with ring worm so by the time we discovered that it was mange and not ringworm the mange had already gotten pretty severe (approximatly 10 to 15 bare spots). I have read several articles both on the internet and here on boxer world but I still seem to be fighting a loosing battle. It is breaking my heart to see Roxie so eat up in this mange. I feel like I'm not doing enough for her being as we have had her on medicine for almost a month and there has been NO improvement there is also a tremendous fear that if we can't beat it and it continues to get worse that we may have to put her down, I know that option would only be for the utter most extreme case but I can't help but worry. If anyone out there has any advise I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Update - Still frustrated! (long)

Well Roxie just got back from her 2 week check-up and still no good news. This makes it a month since we have been treating her.The vet said he still is not seeing any improvement and has suggested that we gradually up her dosage of Invermectin, he also changed her antibiotic and gave us some special shampoo to wash her with once a week. Just this week I have started adding the supplement missing link to her food each day so maybe that will help as well. It is just breaking my heart. My husband and I love to take Roxie places with us but I'm so afraid people will see her and think that we are bad owners or they will be afraid to get near her, so we haven't taken her anywhere for the last month. She really looks terrible. All the spots but one aren't very big it's just that there are a lot of little spots. It just breaks my heart and it is so frustrating. Why isn't she getting better!!!!

I would be surprised if you said this totally cleared up in just 1 month. This usually takes a few months. My Owen was first diagnosed with localized mange when he was about 10 months. He’s turning 1 year this weekend and he still has some spots of it. I’m treating naturally though with a high quality diet and the neem oil mixture from this website. I swear by this oil. It can’t hurt to try, it’s smelly and oily but I really think it’s helped Owen tremendously. He just has 1 or 2 very small spots but as soon as I notice a spot I put the oil on it 2x a day and it clears it up. I don’t know how that would work in a very severe case but Roxie sounds like she has a mild case of it so I would give it a try.

My husband and I love to take Roxie places with us but I'm so afraid people will see her and think that we are bad owners or they will be afraid to get near her, so we haven't taken her anywhere for the last month. She really looks terrible.

Who cares what other people think! Don't make that be a reason not to take her anywhere

I would have to agree with Kim. When my female had localized Demodex, it took 3-4 months to resolve itself.

My advice would be to continue with the Missing Link, make sure she is on a premium quality diet and continue to do what your doing. These things take time

It just takes time. It's really important that you still take her places. It's not your fault that she has demodex and there is no reason for you to be embarrassed. If people ask, just explain that it's not contagious.
