Veggies and Diarrhea!!

I have been feeding my boxer girl barf for one month now. She seems to be doing well with everything but the veggies. We started Barf because she has allergies and is always itching and has frequent diarrhea. Now, she only seems to get diarrhea after her veggie meal. I can hear her poor stomach gurgling through the night, then the next day her stools are very loose. The itching has not stopped yet either, but I am hopeful because she was also always plagued by smelly yeast infections, and that is gone!! I have decided to stop the veggies for one week and start back slowly after that. Any ideas about the best veggies to use? Because of the yeast problems, we avoid anything with a lot of carbs (root veggies) and anything sweet (fruits).

I'm sure more knowledgeable raw feeders will be more help, but my thought is maybe you are giving her too much, too fast. How many veggies are in your mush? Maybe just make a small batch with one or two veggies in it. See what happens. Next, add another veggie. See what happens. Also, instead of giving an entire meal of veggies, try adding a few spoonfuls to an RMB meal or a muscle meat meal. I had to do this with a beef mix I feed to Lacy. It was way to rich for her if I fed it in an entire meal so I would add a small amount of it to other meals. She can now eat the beef mix with barely a problem. I usually buy pre-made veggies, but the last veggies I made on my own I put in Romaine lettuce, carrots, yellow squash, some green beans, an apple and garlic. It definitely sounds like a good idea to take some time off from the veggies, and when you start again, just try to go slow and simple.

HI
Ok how much veggie are you giving her?? 1 cup 2 cup???
try giving her half of what you are as a meal.

also what's in your veggie mix. Try just carrots and leaf lettuce.
A two pound bag of carrots with one large head of leaf lettuce makes enough to feed 5 meals (at least for her)when blended with water. You can also add 3apples if you want.

I would do the previous posters suggestion ..put a few tablespoons with each ground meal or do the shake and bake type with bone meals.

How is she with beef kidney and liver ?? She needs some of that organ meat weekly or even more as well.

Do not feed these with the veggie...that will make her go fast:)

Start off slow....if you want her eating a true veggie meal then add pumpkin to it about half of her meal or some slippery elm. But make sure your not asking her tummy to take on to much at this point..just veggie, just liver, just fish, just yougart, just chicken....she sounds like the sensitive sort so feed each food group separate till she settles always add a few bone meals inbetween those other foods that make her tummy roar.

Also her detox period if she was a allergic animal will be almost 6 months..it won't be till after that, that you will notice the smell gone..she also has to shed out all that bad hair.

Good Luck.

We were advised against using any carrots or other root veggies because they so quickly are converted to sugar and will contribute to the yeast overgrowth. Also no fruits because of the high sugar content. I have only been giving her about 3 or 4 tablespoons of veggie mush, and I mix it in with either her muscle meal or some canned fish. I was using mostly Romaine lettuce, some peas, cucumber and broccoli, but when I start trying next week, I think I'll start with only the lettuce. I know it will take months for her to completely detox, but actually, the nasty, yeasty smell is gone!! We were bathing her twice a week, and she still smelled. Now she smells great, and she hasn't had a bath in three weeks!

Yes you can stay off the carrots/root veggie till her yeast infection clears up however it is a different type of sugar and I have found even the yeasty dogs do well on carrots and apples.

You are feeding Brocoli, a night shade veggie very hard to digest and most of my boxers system dislike them..this could be the cuplrit.
Cucumber is a watery sugar veggie as well with very little nutrient value I would think its a nice waste of money.
Peas..hate them and wont make anyone eat them..LOl!!

Try can pumpkin with the lettus it is a naturally helps balance the intestinal system..totally stops the fast BM's. Also Slipper elm is a campsal that you can use. These will just help the system learn how to find the right digestive aids and deal with the food.

Also is it the only time your feeding fish or muscle meat?? Is she good when you feed those two foods by themselfs?? both of those foods can cause tummy troubles.

Try mixing lettuce and pumpkin then put three tablespoons in a baggy with her whole chicken bones..shake it up like shake and bake then feed.

good luck..

She is doing very well this week without the veggies at all, so I have to assume that they are the main culprit. Though she was a little loose after her organ meal, but you say that is pretty normal. I will definitely try the pumpkin when I start her back on the veggies. I don't have a clue what slipper elm is though. Thanks for the help!:)

I have to agree with Bustersmom and say the broccoli could have been the culprit. Caesars veggie mix and he has lymphoma (in remission) which means no root veggies contains:

2 heads of romaine
1 bunch of parsley
1 1/2 packages of celery or 1 small head of Kale (Kale is similar to broccoli so only use a little)
sometimes I throw a little garlic in there too

Even with chemo this veggie combo has never made him sick and all these veggies have anti-cancer properties. Pumpkin while being helpful for the runs will also covert to sugar.

Glad to hear she is feeling better!

Here is a link for BARF veggies that you may find useful:

When you start veggies again you may want to add one at a time over a period of a few days. That way if your boxer has digestive upset after adding a new veggie you can easily pinpoint which was the culprit and avoid that veggie in the future.

Bustersmom meant SLIPPERY elm.

For more info on this herd check out:

Glad to hear your boxer girl is feeling better.

poor cucumber

Actually the cucumber has small amounts of vit and minerals mostly in the skin ...A,C,calcium, potassium. In a holistic diet it is a cooling food. I use it during the hot months.
