All of these posts make the poor dogs sound like garbage disposals.

 Yep but nothing is going to waste in our house anymore :)

Because mine are cooked I save any xtra veggies from our dinners, freeze them and they go into that weeks meat/veggie mush. For meats (and I know this is off topic) I tend to just use the ground turkey, or sometimes chicken gizzards and hearts. Just depends what is onsale. (I have a wonderful meat manager at the grocery store who holds back one day a week some of the reduced turkey, chicken, gizzards etc. for us) Kailee has a hard time with any beef so we tend to stick to the poultry. They still get some kibble, just not as much as they used to ;)

Whew!
Just a warning, the collards really fill your home with a scent. I notice it when I go outside and come back in!

Now mind you it's not like tripe or anything but they have a distinct vegetable smell.

They do make a nice dark green leafy. It's been my base for the last two mixes. Goes through the grinder nice.

And yes, I include some garlic in each mix.

I made a bunch and froze this time, I have been getting so busy that I tried to save some time doing a huge batch.
And I have already *cheated* and bought the barfworld veggie mix.

Like everyone else I pretty much feed what ever I can get at a reasonable price. Though I do avoid feeding too much of the Cole crops, like cabbage, brocolli and cauliflour and I don't feed nearly as much spinach as I used to as I read somewhere that it wasn't very good for them. I think that variety is the key. That way they should get all the nutrients that they need.

I don't do BARF but I do some homecooking for my pooches... ground turkey meatloaves, sometimes boiled chicken breast and livers. And a pot of mixed boiled veggies that normally consist of, pototo, brown rice, barley, spinach, broccoli, carrots, peas, pasta. I'd like to try some of the veggies that have been posted above. Here's a question... How do you store the veggie mush, if I were to make a big pot of it that would last for 2 weeks. Do I just put it in the fridge or do I need to freeze? And how do yall prepare your mush, is it boiled or just freshly ground up? I'm not very sure my boxer would touch fresh veggie mix.

I make a huge pot every other Sunday, then freeze it in portion sized packages (double portions as I am feeding it to two) My mush is cooked, I did try giving fresh to Kailee way back when, but she had problems digesting fresh, but she does well with it being cooked.

I just started using this as my foundation recipe about a month ago and both Kailee and Clyde love it!! I refrain from using canned veggies though and use fresh or frozen intead. Like I said it is just a foundation recipe, and I varie from it based on what is available and on sale. I haven't used potatoes all that much, Kailee and Clyde seem to prefer rice (and I use unbleached rice) to potatoes anyways. (Imagine me having boxers that don't prefer potatoes :D ) Click Here to see the recipe

Another item I usually include is flax seeds. Make sure they are fresh. I store mine in the freezer until I need them, and grind them in a clean coffee grinder before putting them in the blender with the veggis. They are a wonderful for maintaining a healthy heart. :)

Sounds yummy!! Actually I have caught hubby lifting the lid on the pot when I am making it :D You'd think by now he would have it figured out, "No I do not cook for you I only cook for the dogs. See that freezer over there? it is for the dogs food not ours."

LOL Jean! :D :p My dogs just got done eating their supper and they LOVED it! They have never had kale or sweet pototo before! :) They are licking the bottoms of the bowls! I know they had plenty and I just can't give in and give them more! We can't have fat doggies! :p They are in for another treat in about a half hour... peanut butter dog cookies are in the oven now.;)
