Since switching my boys to BARF, their veggie mush has had basically the same things in it (not including the meats)... green beans, carrots (organic), kale, green collards, eggs, bananas, apples, romaine lettuce, and ocassionally asparagus.

Now I'm stuck!!

I want to add more things to rotate the veggies, but I'm not sure what I should add and what I should leave out. I can't imagine making a much with 20 different veggies in it so I would have to drop something to add something. I would like to keep each mush meal at a max of 5 or 6 different veggies. Unless of course that's not a good number.

So, my question is... do you have a favorite veggie mush recipe that you like to feed your dogs?? If so, please do share. :)

Oh, and please include the number of mouths you're feeding so I can adjust the recipe to fit my boys. ;)

Mandy, my veggie mush recipe comprises of whatever happens to be lying around in the fridge and / or whatever happend to be on special :) 5 mouths to feed. Try throwing in some Brocolli, Silverbeet, Alfalfa Sprouts, Mung Beans, Celery, Parsley or cooked pumpkin now and again. There are no hard and fast rules - sometimes I'll use only one thing, at others it is close to the 20 if I have stuff I want to use up.

Like Sharon, my mush changes all the time depending on what the store has. I like to also include in my mush, spinach, squash (yellow or zucchini), slightly baked sweet potato, tomato, apples, chard, other varities of lettuce, eggplant (not super often), green bell pepper, green beans, peas. As you can see most anything goes :p

sweet potatoes(occasionally)
cucumbers(not for Miss Gassy Pheebers)
endive
Mushrooms(occasionally for the girls, George is too picky for fungus)
green beans
celery( but King George wants his with creme cheese)
Avocado
Tomatoes (they will steal these off the vine)
Zucchini

Mandy,
alot of what veggies I use depends on my garden that year and what is in 'season' George is the picky one so his mush has to be just so........ the girls really just don't care. Phoebe's has to be 'non-gassy' her butt is a deadly weapon if she eats cucumbers, or endive

I went by the suggestions in Switching to Raw picking two veggies from each list. (Stars by the recent favorites.)
List 1
Romaine
Spinach*
Kale*
Chard
beet greens
turnip greens
collards*
parsley*
cilantro
dandelion
bok choy*

List 2
broccoli*
cauliflower
cabbage*
carrots*
yams
sweet potatoes
yellow squash
beets
celery
ginger root*
garlic*

Apples and blueberries have made their way in too!:)

My ravenous trio are thrilled with their veggies (then again they've been thrilled with every morsel of this diet!)

Ashlie's post reminded me that the only rule I do stick to with the mush is that I always add garlic (the real stuff) :)

Stupid Question - what are collards? I know we call different fruits and veggies by different names depending on where we live - for instance Peppers are Capsicum here and Squash are Zuchinni - but Collards has me beat :p

Like Sharon my veggie mush is whatever is onhand and what is onsale (I homecook, not BARF yet ;) )

I use the following veggies

romaine
spinach
greenbeans
carrots
lima beans
kidney beans
zuchinni
celery
tomatoes
potatoes (sometimes or rice)
broccoli
cauliflower
squash (when I have some leftover)
eggplant

Basically, I open the fridge and freezer and start dumping in. I also purchase veggies from the reduced fresh veggie section so whatever is on there they get, oh and one must not forget the GARLIC!! No measured ingredients, no real recipe, I know that the huge pot I have makes two weeks worth of veggie/meat mixture so as long as it is filled I know I have enough ;) I guess one could say Kailee and Clyde eat "Pot Luck"

Oh for Sharon Collards

And one of many recipes:

They are like mustard greens...........

for humans you cook them just a bit, like a tough green (they are of the dandilion family)

Thanks! I don't think we have them here but they look very similar to Silverbeet. Jean, I'll try that recipe on Silverbeet :)

Looks like a nice dark green leafy for the veggie mush.

Wow, thanks for all of the responses!! :D I'll definitely be using some of the suggestions for our next mush. ;)

All of these posts make the poor dogs sound like garbage disposals. :p
