Hi!
I am really looking for some information and suggestions and if this is not the right place for this question moderators please move it to the appropriate place.
My boxer girl is 2 1/2 and has had her share of itchy feet, allergies, spay incontinence and stomach problems. She has been vaccinated for everything standard for the past 2 years but I am not sure what to do this year.
I will get her vaccinated for rabies obviously but the others I am unsure about. I have read a ton online and the experts totally do not agree.....
Portia is a kiddo who seems to catch everything but does that mean that I should pump her full of shots and possibly compromise her immune system...or should I not get anything but her rabies and assume if she catches something later that I will treat it then?
I am also obviously giving her flea and heartworm protection as well..
By the way...she is on Wellness and vegetables as treats and I am not really interested right now in considering the raw foods...perhaps in the future!
Thank you so much!

Hi,

There's no reason you should re-vaccinate if you don't want to. There have studies that showed vaccines last anywhere from 7 years, to the life of the pet. If you would like, so you can get peace of mind (like I did) you can do titers, which is a blood test that will show the levels of antibodies in your dog, that way you will know for sure. If you can find a holistic veterinary, they are more likely to be in favor of non-vaccinating and offer more suggestions.

Hope that helps

I agree 100% with Entelekia. If you are not comfortable with routine vaccinations - don't do them. I titre test rather than give routine vacs, and guess what - he has yet to need more vaccinations. There are some great threads on this subject here on BW, if you do a search you will come up with a lot of great information.

Yes, please do search here, there is tons of information and a plethora of great links. :) Also watch the dates of various recommendations - the newer recommendations are for less frequent vaccination.

I'm not sure why you'd get a rabies vacc this year, though - it's only required legally every three years in IL, so you could skip it this year and next year. :)

In Cook County, this is only true if you get the "three year" vaccination. If you get the "one year" dose, you must do it ever year.

OK, but they're the same vaccine - ask the vet to mark it as a three-year shot. :)

Wow, I found this thread interesting. I had all the available shots done on my babies. I guess I just never know what to do and totally put my trust in the vet. Now I'm wondering if that was the right thing. I will say though that I know of several dogs who ended up with lyme disease so I'd never skip it but I do live in an area in Connecticut where ticks are around. I also go to a park every week and let them play outside every day. I also had a shot called Corona done and had never heard of it. Again, just did what the vet said I should. Makes me wonder if they are really worried about my dogs or the money all the shots bring in.

I was going to mention that too. The vacc is the same, there is no three year vac or one year vac. One year/three year thing is decided by the vet who gives you the certificate.
