I need advise please. Has anyone ever used sunscreen on their dog? My little girl Palin is an 11 mo old white boxer who is also a sun worshiper. Now that the sun is out and the days are warm after our rainy spell, I can’t keep her out of the sun. Yesterday she spent a good part of the day lying in the grass soaking it in. When we were snuggling last night, it looked like she was sun burned. Her little ears, nose, and back legs were pinker than usual and they felt warm. I have seen doggy sun screens in the pet stores but has anyone used any, if so, what is the best type. She really doesn’t like me to spray things on her or close to her so I was wondering if anyone had used a wipe version. Since I need to get so close to her ears and face, I also don’t like the thought of spraying something that could get in her eyes as well. Any help or info is greatly appreciated.

i have read a previous post on this and the replys were to use sunscreen for babies/children since more are hypoallergenic. I have used it on a few beach days on my dogs mask but that is the only part of him that is white. The newer aresol cans may work well if your boxer is white that way you can spray all over. Like you said, really focus on nose/ears/head.

I agree with the above on using ones made for babies. Also though as with humans the sun can cause skin cancer in dogs so how much she lays out really should be monitored. Sometimes you have to bring them in whether they want to or not for safety's sake. Maybe let her stay out for 15-20 minutes at a time, it would eliminate the need for sunblock (which probably shouldn't be used daily) and would also keep the suns rays to a minimum. And yes, if she's pinker than normal she is sunburned, very common with whites.

We have a white male, and we bought some children's sunscreen -- the spray kind. I spray a little at a time into my hand and then rub it on his snout, head, ears, and other exposed areas. Not every day, though -- just when we're planning to be outside in the sunshine for an hour or more.

I have a white male who had very pink skin when I first got him...now he is getting more brown spots on his skin as he grows...I never used sunscreen on him as the sun never really seemed to bother him..he has never even showed signs of being sunburned...There are three large shade trees in the kennel so I guess he stays under them all the time

You are definitely going to have to limit her sunbathing! Caney also LOVES to lay in the sun out in the backyard. We have a doggy door which used to be convenient for the dogs to go in and out to potty when we were gone, but now that we have Caney I have to keep it shut during the day when the sun's out or she would be out there all day. After breakfast each day she goes out to do her business and usually ends up staying out in the yard for a while, but after about 10 minutes I call her inside and shut the door. I don't keep her from going outside to play or limit fun outdoor activities -- she always has sunblock on for those times -- but sunbathing is just a waste when we already spend plenty of time outdoors actually doing things!
I use baby sunscreen lotion, SPF 50 on Caney. I just put a big blob on her head and rub it in, the same with the backs of her ears, and then put some in my hands and do my best to cover the bridge of her nose (all while straddling her back and holding her head up, LOL). Then I put some on the backs of her legs and the end of her nub (there is no hair on the end of it and it's usually pointed straight at the sun

Have you seen him stay in the shade when he's in the kennel? If you don't know I would guess he is spending at least SOME time in the sun
A sign of too much sun is slightly pinker skin, which also happens when they've been physically active, so you might not be able to tell. Of course the other obvious sign is skin cancer but you don't want to wait until that happens to take action. The summer sun in Georgia is brutal!

Well goodness how long are you going to be going on walks? he should be fine outside for 20-30 minutes (maybe a bit longer depending on where you live and the time of day) before needing anything.
I'd just put it where the hair is thinner (insides of legs, etc).
