There is a pill (in treat form so the dogs love it) that you can give your dog a few times a day that will stop their urine from killing the grass. I don't know what the pill is called but I'll find out today and post it.

I've got 2 words for you if you have the money: ARTIFICIAL TURF!!

We tried everything--tomato juice, the pills etc. What finally worked was training them to go in an area with pea gravel. We dug out about 4 inches and put down gravel, then packed sand then pea gravel. It took them about a week of walking them to the area and training them to do their business there. There's no smell in a 5x5' area where two dogs pee.

The rest of the lawn was destroyed by their traffic patterns, so we scraped up the money (at $10/sq ft) to put in the artificial turf. It was so worth it, no muddy paws and you just hose it off. Looks real too. And they LOVE it. As long as your dogs don't dig--it's ideal.

I did the same thing w/ artificial turf:). I just got sick of replacing the lawn. I have had it for four years now and it's help up perfectly....even to three boxers!

I don't know if artificial turf would work for us. How do you clean the pee gravel? Just rinse every day?

You can just hose off the pea gravel--we usually just let the sprinklers go on it--I have dumped some vinegar & water on it a couple of times if it smells a bit. But overall, this has been the best compromise. They use it exclusively to pee out of habit now and each dog has their own "corner" where they go.

I kind of thinks it's funny when their playing in the yard and break to run over and go pee in their spots.

I have the same issue with Tae--her urine kills the grass. Discussed it with the vet and he told me we do not want to alter the urine pH. Soooo, I've decided it's a losing battle--for now--in the back yard! He did mention, as some others have, that it I dilute the area after she pees, it should save the grass. Great idea, but I don't follow Tae around the back yard. lol

No one has mentioned in their posts if their dogs are "fixed" or not. I have seen that it is both boys and girls, but I have no issues what-so-ever with Dillon's urine killing the grass. He has been fixed, but my parents had and Austrailian Shepard that was in tact and his urine killed the grass something awful. I thought once the hormones our out of their system you shouldn't have the grass issues anymore or maybe I've just been really lucky with D.

Both my dogs are fixed and both leave big yellow patches in the grass. I ran for the hose to water down the area where they urinated for about 2 years before I realized that I was wasting my time. For every one area I diluted there were at least 3 that I missed.
