SHE MADE IT!

Hi Carrie, Stephanie & all you other wonderful boxer guardians!
Diva had a successful operation and is recovering nicely thank you very much! YAY! I feel like a great weight has been lifted.
Her doctor said that her heart was steady throughout the operation and that while they had her "opened", they checked out all of her other organs (liver, kidneys, etc.) and they looked very healthy. That's a good sign. She even showed us the removed tumor, which looked like a golf ball shaped piece of beef liver, and it was very self-contained. This means that even if it was malignant, it may take longer to spread to other organs. That was very encouraging as well. She was kept at the vet overnight, and we had a slight scare when we went to pick her up. Seems she was so excited to see us, she started to breathe very rapidly and kind of sat down on the floor. Then we noticed that her gums were white and her tongue looked kind of greyish-white!!
The vet rushed her to another room and she was put on oxygen and stabilized within 15 minutes. The vet said that her heart was going 220 bpm which is outrageous! We decided to let her stay one more night to rest, and picked her up the next day (yesterday). She's resting comfortably right now and her breathing has been normal thus far.
We are trying to tweak her medication, thinking that perhaps she was not getting it when she really needed it, and that's why she normally had rapid, shallow breathing at night. We'd give her the pill at 8 am and again at 8 pm as indicated on the medication bottle (and we told the assistants at the vet's office to give it to her at these times), but since those directions are for humans, we've decided that maybe it's not right for a dog. So now, we give it to her at 8 am and again at 6:30, when she's still active. We'll see what happens. I have a call in with the cardiologist to firm up a plan to optimize the medicating.
We'll find out via the biopsy in a week if the tumor is cancerous. The vet said that if it were any other breed, she would say it's NOT cancerous, but since it's a boxer, well, you know...
We're hearing all of these things like she only has 3-6 months if it's cancer, but we have a neighbor who says that they had a dog who had her spleen removed, part of the liver, AND it was cancer, but she lived a healthy life for 2 years after the operation to the ripe old age of 14. I'll just be happy for another year with this character! :p
Anyway, I'll keep you all updated and once again, thanks for your prayers and support!
Health and happiness to all!

Oh my gosh, I am so happy she is doing ok. I was soooooo worried somthing happened because you didn't post anything for a few days BUT I was praying it was because you were so busying taking care of Dive (which is VERY understandable;) ) YEAH, I am so glade she is back home with you were she belongs!!!!!!!

It's gonna be a looooooong week while you wait for the biopsy results (been there, done that ;) ) it's so stressful. But I will continue to keep Diva in my thoughts and prayers and hope for good news with the results. Please keep us updated on her progress and let us know the results when they come in.

Give Diva a great big (((((((HUG)))))) from us. We are sending a buch of ~~~~~~~~speedy recovery~~~~~~~~AND~~~~~~~~~~positive vibes~~~~~~~~~her way!!!!!!!!!!

appicon WAY TO GO DIVA GIRL!
I was worried too when you didn't post. The numbers they give you are just statistics. Only the Man upstairs knows when your baby will be called home. Just relax and enjoy her.

I wish you all of the best with hemangiosarcoma BUT (I am using this eraser word). Please please please read all you can about this disease.
There was not much info on the web 3 years ago when my 9 year old got it. I didn't know until I was 4 months into treatment at a cost of near 4000, yes $4,000, that the prognosis without treatment was 3 weeks and with treatment you had to treat every 3 weeks.
It is an ugly type of cancer as it travels in the blood to every organ. It is not contained in the spleen.
My girl lived 19.5 wonderful weeks but with this type of cancer we have discussed in the family and with our new vet that we would not treat again.
No one told us what this really was.
I am at work and don't have the links but please please read.
Hug Diva Love her Hold her Take loads of pictures.
I don't regret it but the disease was awful and we have a veterinary oncology clinic nearby that we took her to.
Hugs to all and sorry this isn't upbeat but please please please read all you can and ask the hard questions.

NO CANCER!

Hi all,
One more update: we just got the results of the biopsy of the spleenic tumor and it was NOT cancer! The doctor said that it was a miracle! She also said that we probably saved her life by deciding to have the surgery ASAP because if we didn't, she would probably have died a not-too-nice death via the rupture of the tumor.
I hope this information helps someone who has a similar decision to make--our Boxers are NOT always doomed to die of cancer! Sometimes a tumor is just a tumor. Sometimes we CAN beat the odds!
So for now, all we have to do is focus on her heart problem and the little bit of arthritis she has in her front paw. A great weight has been lifted...for now! :p
Thanks again for all of your positiveness and support! Diva sends you all a nice sloppy kiss!
Best,
Tanya
