Well Saturday I decided to go to the vet and get more info on the cancerous(sp?) bump the doc said he had. I spoke with another vet that was sooooooo helpful and sympathetic....He read the report to me which stated the lump removed was a mast cell tumor grade 2. He said that the sides were all clean of cancer but we might want to consult an oncologist and he might recommend chemo.....but overall Dekan is A-ok right now....I just want to thank everyone who gave good wishes and suggestions because it really helped me get through friday night....Thanks guys!

so happy that Dekan is going to be ok. clean sides is a good thing. but yes I would still consult an oncologist just to be on the safe side.

So glad to hear the news about Dekan. My Potsie had a grade II MCT removed about 2 years ago, when he was only one year old. His margins were dirty and it was in his groin (more aggressive behavior there), so he needed radiation. He is doing just fine now.

Where was Dekan's tumor located on his body? Usually if a margins are clean for a Grade II, the oncologist will just recommend to monitor him closely for tumor regrowth at the site and to be very vigilant in trying to locate any new tumors. It is always a really good idea to consult with a vet. oncologist, though.

Good luck to you -- it's really good news!!! Now you can finally relax and enjoy your Labor Day weekend.

Dekan's bump was on his elbow......it was there for about two monthes(same size) we made an appt to have it removed and within a week it grew about a third bigger....it's a good thing we removed it....whew...we go to the oncologist on the 12th....so thinking good thoughts!

Austin's was on his front leg and it was also a grade 2. We did surgery and no other treatment and thankfully he's been fine and that was three years ago.

I have read that mast cell tumors located on the limbs tend to have a better prognosis than those on the trunk/body. Those tumors located in the groin/armpit area/mouth/muzzle tend to have a more aggressive behavior and may require more extensive or invasive follow up treatment. I would think that the fact that Dekan's tumor was on his elbow plus the clean margins, might not warrant any follow up at all except keeping a careful eye on the area for tumor regrowth.

Wishing you the best!!
