that is what we came across the other day. Fortunately, he was very friendly, because Maggie is not, towatds other dogs, when Maggie IS on a leash. So we just kind of stopped when we saw it. The Great Dane stopped, then slowly approached, until Maggie goes up onhere hind legs and gets excited. Two young girls (less than 10 years old) come and get the dog, and my wife informs them how a big dog like that should be on a leash.

Anyway, we come across the Great Dane a few other times, but no big deal. Then we are walking down the paved path, and I see the Great Dane runnig around in a field by the lake, where his family is on a blanket. i am thinking, "I have never seen such a playful Great Dane" As we continue on the path and near the area they are, the Great Dane comes running over. At this point, I am like, "ok Maggie, you are meeting this dog. Starts off well, then Maggie snarls, and the Great Dane retreats, as they usually aren't viscious dogs, even though they are big. I apologize to the owner, and explain that Maggie is usually friendly if she isn't on a leash, and ask if I can let her off and see if they play. They said sure, and away they went.

Maggie had so much fun. They took turns chasing eachother, running in the water, and had endless fun. The Great Dane would occassionally lean in and try an "body check" Maggie while they were on the run. One time to avoid this, Maggie hurdled right over the back of the large dog in mid stride, very impressive. She tried this again later, and landed right on his back, went for a ride for a few steps, then tumbled off, very funny.

I also got a kick out of Maggie trying to box this dog. She would be up on her hind legs, and barely reach his head. When he got annoyed with this, he would just shake his head a little, and down Maggie would go.

I can't believe how much fun she had with this dog. Luckily it was a Mondya afternoon, and the park was pretty empty, otherwise we would have never gotten away with having the dogs loose, although they ususally don't mind if they are in the water.

I had to laugh at Maggie going for a ride. Tiger has a Great Dane friend too. They haven't had a chance to play with each other off the leash yet, but Casper (GD) loves to play and nobody else in the area will let their dogs play with him. He is only a year old, and he tries to box Tiger. It is the funniest thing. Tiger usually trips Casper by weaving in and out of his legs

I'm glad that Maggie had a fun play date! Every Great Dane we've ever come across has been a big sweetie! Really live up to the "gentle giant" image!

What a lovely story.

The only experience Monty and I have had with Great Danes happened a few months ago. Near where we live is an old deserted Mansion house in acres of grounds. I used to take Monty there for exercise sometimes as it seemed an ideal safe place for him off the lead. The only downside was that it was an isolated place to be on your own. Great if my sis and his sis were there but I rarely went there on my own as I felt too vunerable.

It was announced in the local paper that the house and land had been sold. Shortly afterwards I was walking up the long sweeeping driveway, Monty was on the lead as cattle from an adjoining field were up against the fence. I was just about to let him off when from arround the corner raced 3 Great Danes. They completely surrounded us but to my amazement were so friendly. ( I now know what little children must feel like when a dog comes nearly up to their chest).

Well to cut a long story short, We met the new owner, I apologised, he said it was ok he hadn't got arround to putting up notices saying it was now private property. I commended him on his dogs gentle attitude and he said this is just how most Great Danes are.

Aimee, when you encounter another dog, and yours is on a leash, it is not uncommon for them to growl and snarl. Krikkit had supplied me with a couple of articles, and they basically stated if you make the leash tight, and speak in a firm or harsh voice, these are primary commands whne training an attack dog. So, while we are trying to keep our dogs from being "mean" to another dog, we are actually teaching them to be aggressive.

Maybe Krikkit can supply links to these articles, they were very helpful for me, and since I read them, Maggie has been able to play with several dogs, when I otherwise would not have given her that opportunity.

My dogs have had fun in the park with Great Danes before too - they look so majestic lolloping along when they gallop.

Another big dog that is a favourite friend of Billy is Charlie, a St Bernard. He dwarfs Billy, but they play really nicely.
