We purchased a home in April. We have a terrier mix and a boxer. Our new neighbor has a dalmation. She 1st asked us to pick up "messes" in our yard after our dogs were done with thier business, as she found this unpleasant. I obliged, I usually clean our yard every couple days. Now she has a problem with us letting our dogs out in the am before work, she insists we leave them out for 20 min. and they bark non-stop. We dont have 20 min. to spare and 97 % of our neighborhood has dogs, some tied outside 24/7, and could be barking also. She told us she is partially deaf, and uses ear plugs, air conditioning and nothing works, our "barking dogs" are ruining her health, we can not let them out in the am, or she will contact the police until they are taken from us. It's inhumane to not let the dogs out, before crating them when we go to work. They are indoor dogs. We dont tie our dogs outside for the day, or hours on end. She said our boxer needs to stop peeing on her fence but he smells the urine from her dalmation doing it, and tries to cover the scent. The other neighbors said she complains alot. When dogs bark, her dalmation barks in her house. My fiance thinks when we let our dogs out, her dalmation barks. That is why she cant sleep. I dont think she can tell us we can not let our dogs out in the am, that is too much for their bladders. Having a dog, you would think she would understand. I am very worried. Our dogs are our babies. Please help with advice!:(

your neighbor sounds completely unreasonable and maybe even a bit looney. i would continue on with my normal routine. maybe she will get sick of complaining. maybe she will call the police. that might actually be quite funny. i can't imagine that they would appreciate her wasting their time with such a ridiculous complaint. if there were laws against letting your dog out for a wee in the morning, then we'd all be in big trouble.
i can't imagine how twenty minutes of even the loudest, craziest non-stop barking could possibly have a serious effect on someone's health. i doubt seriously that she will be able to cause you any real trouble...aside from being a pain in your a$$.
hang in there,

OMG!!! That is the most rediculous thing I've ever heard!!!!! I would tell her to stick it in her ear!! I mean, who died and made her potty police, to tell you when you can let your dogs out and for how long. Some people just amaze me. She cannot tell you what you can do with your dogs on your property. I personally would dare her to call the police. It's not your fault she can't keep her own dog from barking. Is your back yard fenced? If so, the side of the fence they are peeing on is yours :p . Also, if she is partially deaf, how can she hear your dogs barking anyway if she is in the house with the a/c on? I would really like to see her file a police report on the grounds that your barking dogs are ruining her health. I would get with your neighbors around you and talk with them and make sure they have your back just incase this nut bar does try to call the police. Trust me, she does not have a leg to stand on and no, they will not take your babies away. Some people just have nothing better to do than complain. It's really sad that some people are so miserable with their life that the only thing they can do is to try to make other people as miserable as them. Good luck, but I wouldn't worry about her at all, she has no case.:p But keep us posted!

You mentioned a fence, does this fence separate your property from hers? If so, and she is not your landlord/property owner, she needs to shut her whiny pie hole  I think I would let my dogs out for 40 minutes instead of the usual 20, and I would let them out at 4 am and again at 6am. You should just start laughing at her and walk into your house when she tries to nag at you. Lots of luck.

She sounds on some sort of a power trip. Just ignore her, most likely she really can't do anything to you legally, so she is simply bullying you. What a nut.

If the facts are as you told us, police is not likely to intervene. In order for police to do something you must be violating some ordinance, regulation, law or another. Police is employed to protect the general public and enforce the law, not serve to the every whim of old bored ladies.

Furthermore, what's police going to do with the dogs? On what grounds? Are they vicious? Have there been complaints filed of your dogs endangering humans? Are they a public nuisance (VERY hard to prove, believe me)? Are they running loose? It is very hard to remove anything, particularly animals, from their owners if said animals are not dangerous, are provided with food and shelter and are on a private property.

Yes, we own our house, just bought it - welcome to the neighborhood. :p Her fence is actually two feet onto our property, and if she has so many problems, maybe we could have a problem with that. I dont like to be rude though, and when she got hostile after my fiance told her that her allegations were ridiculous and we would continue to let our dogs out, I was speechless, I didnt know how to respond. When she started raising her voice my boxer got upset, being protective like he is, and his hair raised on his back and he actually started growling so I had to take him inside. When I came back out she said she would contact the authorities from now on instead of talking to us. Our other neighbors we talked to said they have no problem with our dogs being outside in the morning, and they dont bark that often and if they do it is because of another barking dog or a squirrel, etc. We heard she picked on an elderly lady who lives across the street from her, for her poodle being disruptive, there was almost a fist fight and she was screaming at the elderly lady. I guess she really is doggy patrol or something. If we had known she would be this way, we would not have bought our house. The ironic thing is she is a school teacher and has to be up at 6:15 am, but said she is losing 1/2 hr to 1 hr of sleep every morning due to our dogs, that is why her health is fading. ok....I dont really want to deal with this woman anymore, she scares me. I know if police due come to our house, our boxer will act up as he always does when there are visitors, bouncing up and down, barking, being his hyper typical tigger-like self, and I hope that doesnt give the police officer a bad image, like I have an out of control, possibly aggressive dog. As she said my dog is aggressive too.. I suppose he is when he feels his family is threatened. That is all I can relay for now, I must say I do feel sorry for her dalmation!

I think the more "aggressive" - if you can call it that of our two dogs would be our terrier mix, she is a toughy, and only likes certain people.. Duke would go home with anyone who had a treat! He is dog aggressive with certain dogs though, and I admit that, but I always keep him on a leash when outside. We have had no complaints about our dogs before either.

maybe you should beat her to the punch and file a complaint against *her*. it sounds like she is harassing you and others in your neighborhood. you could at least make some kind of statement. that way, if she does try to make trouble for you, you have it documented that she started the whole string of unpleasantness. you can say that she has been provoking your dog and making outrageous threats.
at least keep your own record of all contact you have with her so that you will have some concrete examples of her lunacy if the fuzz comes knockin' (which i still very much doubt will happen). i would also say you should be careful to keep your cool around her so that she never gets any legitimate complaint against you. that would be the hard part for me. :D

Definitely have a problem with her fence. If you don't do anything, you WILL lose that land under the theory of adverse posession.

She is obligated, under law, to remove and redo the fence. After that, see what happens. Good luck.

I think you should go online to the Dog Federation of Wisconsin

http://www.chowwelfare.com/DFOW/

If you can't find it there I think you can e-mail them to find out exactly what the law states and what your rights are.

I would be careful because she sounds a little nuts (or alot nuts:) I hope she wouldn't do anything to harm your babies. I would keep a watchful eye.
