Underage Puppy has a worm?

Hello,

My son and DIL have gotten a new boxer puppy. The breeder (probably a backyard breeder) let all the puppies go early and theirs was the only one left and being kept outside in the heat and was weaned off momma's milk and they were trying to feed her hard food.

So at 5 weeks they decided to take her home, due to the fact that they didn't feel she was in a good environment.

They have a vet appt. set, but it's not for 4 days. Today, my DIL saw a small 1/2 inch long yellowish worm come out of puppys bottom. She is really concerned and wants to do something for her.

She was considering going to walmart and picking up a "de-wormer", but due to puppy's young age, we were thinking this could possibly do more harm than good.

Advice please????

I don't think I would get de-wormer from Walmart. Certainly not at such a young age. I would see if she can get a earlier appointment, if she tells the vet that the puppy has worms. She could also try another vet.

I called my DIL back (they aren't local to me) and let her know what you suggested. She did call Petco and they recommended something that is for puppies 4 weeks and up. They did purchase that and gave it to her.
Meanwhile, she discovered it was a tapeworm. :/

They are going to call the vet tomorrow (as they weren't open today) and see about getting her in asap.
