Hadley's

Boxer Pal
For those of you who leave your boxers alone during the day, what is your morning routine? Hadley and I just moved into a new apartment and I am going to have to leave him for 4-8 hours every day. I have planned on waking up early enough to take him on a 30 minute walk and then feeding him and taking him out one more time before I leave to work. Does this sound right? I am afraid of him not having enough time to digest before I leave but I heard that it gives dogs indigestion to exercise after eating.

Any and all advice would be appreciated.

I wake up with Tessa at 6:30-7:00 and leave at 8:40, so we have about 2 hours together before I leave. Keeping in mind that an hour of that time is "getting ready for work" time. As soon as i wake we go for a 30 min walk (sometimes a bit longer), then we come in she eats, then plays, then goes back outside to do her business, then watches me get ready while filling upu on treats, then in her crate. She's alone until 4:30 at which time daddy comes home. She is an extremely happy 9 month old and has been on this schedule since a pup. If your routine is going to change any, I would suggest having a walker come in mid day for a few weeks, then have the walker come later and later each day until you're the next person she sees. This way your pup gradually gets used to its routine as dogs don't understand where or why we are where we are when we're not with them. We did the walker thing and it worked perfect.

Good luck!

Take It Slowly. . .

Rusty was left alone in the house when he was only 3 months old. At first, I confined him to a room, and he ripped up the linoleum!!!! I then got a neighbor to come over about 3 times daily to let him out. After that, Rusty was great, never destructive, and never bothered anything. Today Rusty will sometimes get mad, and tump over the trash, but that is about it. Casey was another story. I left her inside when she was 2 and 3 years old, and she was destructive. She would chew up plastic things, remote controls, CD's, picture frames, books, and lotions. I started leaving her outside when I was gone, with a heated doghouse, and letting her back inside when I was there. Now, at 7 years old, her behavior is random, most of the times she is good, but every once in awhile I will find a tube of cream chewed up on my bed!!! She never got into food, just odd things. Now I keep my bedroom closed and my entertainment room closed, or leave her outside. Rocky and Saddam are still very destructive at age 2 years. One day I left Saddam in the kitchen with Casey and Rusty, he shredded the trash, and knocked and broke pots on the stove. Rockey was left for about 1 hour and shredded a down comforter, and a quilt. My advice is to leave your animal in one room for short periods of time, for about 1 or 2 hours, and see if there is any destruction. Some dogs, like Rusty, will not bother anything. Other dogs, like Saddam, have to either be crated or put outside to avoid disaster!!!! Good luck!!!!!!!!

Boxer Insane
I used to leave katie home alone when i first got her, but she ate everything! and destroyed so much more. I kept trying hoping that she would get better, even confined her into smaller spaces, all that meant was a smaller damage path. Tried baby gates, she jumped them or knocked them out of the door. Anyhow, I finally bought a crate and used that. She adapted well to it. She turns 4 this year, and last winter I tried to leave her out of her crate for a little while (grocery shopping) and such. Well, the first few times she was an angel. Then she started destroying stuff again. I have had to put her back into her crate. It makes both of us feel better.

My advice would be to try leaving them out for short periods, see how well they do. Then make a decision. My son when he was little wouldnt think of touching anything that he wasnt supposed to touch. I could step out into the garage for 10-15 min when he was 3. My sister's kids eat screws and nail polish while she is standing next to them! So each kid is different, Fur and Skin! Good luck! :D
