Ultimate Test

I was walking Oscar at lunch on our usual path. It is a paved path in a rural setting. There are usually no others out at the time I take lunch so I let him play some off leash. He was about 10 feet from me when I looked over on a big bank and there was a huge groundhog. Oscar saw the ground hog just as the ground hog saw him. The ground hog stood up and Oscar froze. Every muscle of his beautiful mahognay body was taut and the ears were tilted forward.

I was wasn't sure what to do. Call him and get him moving??? Try to grab him??? So, I gave him the sit command AND HE DID...I gave him the wait command AND HE DID. As I was walking to him the groundhog took off and I thought maybe........but he sat and waited.

Such a good boy! That definately deserves a new toy or bunches and bunches of cookies!

very very good! i wish my bfs rottis were that well behaved... theyve gotten many groundhogs and squirrels. Mainly cuz his parents are idiots and dont look before they let the dogs out. They have a tree in the backyard and theyll let the dog sout while theers squirrels in the tree and they have no way of getting away. The whole army base is built on top of a groundhog colony..I always joke and say the groundhogs are plotting to take over.

WOW!

Daisy takes off after everything that isn't person or dog. She will circle back to me within a few seconds, but she would never do a sit / stay for me if a ground hog was milling around.

She has never seriously hurt anything, but she has caught a cat. She simply mouthed the cat, who was none to impressed. I screamed at daisy and the cat(stray) ran back into the woods accross the street ( still can't believe she caught it ). By the by, that stupid cat still frequents our yard to this day, 10 months later.

A grouchy, old racoon took his time running up a tree about a year ago. Both Daisy and the racoon survived with minor injuries... however, I don't believe they will ever want to meet each other again.

... and don't get me started on squirrels!!!

WOW!! Good boy Oscar! That is awesome!! My girl does good with her commands if we are inside with no distractions...but I know she would've took off after that groundhog! That deserves something really special!
