It's been pretty cold lately so we haven't really had a chance to take him on a walk (we have a big back yard for him to run in though) so the only times he has been on a leash is for his vet checkups and needless to say he really really doesn't like it.... If he feels even a little bit of pressure on his neck from the leash he will sit down and not move. I'm obviously not going to drag him but I want him to get used to his leash. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get him used to it???

It's pretty typical for puppies to not like their collar or their leash at first...I guess it compares to human babies always taking their socks off...they don't belong there  The only tip I can think of is to always associate the leash with something positive. Even going to vet can be exciting for some dogs, especially when they get a lot of possitive attention there. I know there are some good training methods that can assist with this, I just don't know what they are...sorry :o

It's also helpful if you get him used to it by letting him drag it around the house, get him to follow you with it on while you hand out some tasty treats. Like the above poster mentioned it's new to him so best get him to associate it with a positive thing. ;) Good luck.

 I never thought of it that way but you are right! What a great analogy. And I agree with Ellen, let pup drag it around, lots of good treats, and eventually they forget about it. Good luck

It took Nikita a few wks to get used to the leash and collar. I know for the longest time she was scratching her neck non stop when collar was on. I agree with letting him drag it around the house.:)

I guess i'll have to let him get used to it inside, because it's waaaaay too cold to have to stop n wait for him to go...LOL

leash and collar

i have the same problem before with my 2 boxer's i did the same let then drag it and most of the time i leave the collar on. every time i put the leash on i make it to a point that we play with the leash and collar on, this way they know that collar and leash means play and treat. so every time they see me hold a collar and leash they are the one who come to me sit in front and wait for me to put it to them.

How old is Tyson? It looks like he is a little guy. Perfectly normal not to like the leash. I agree, just let him drag it, and everytime you clip it on, give him a treat. Give him time, he'll get used to it. It's funny, but NOW when my dog sees me grab a leash, she goes NUTS cuz, she knows we are going somewhere haha.

You could try putting the leash on for feedings. That is how I got Mali acclimated to her Gentle Leader. When a meal is associated with it, it becomes a good thing.

Hi! I am having the same problem with my 16wk old male puppy. He will just sit down & say drag me if you can!LOL! He is used to having the collar on because I leave it on most of the time but when I put the leash on he doesn't want to cooperate at all. I have let him drag it around the house but it hasn't made any difference with him. I even try enticing (sp?) him with treats, he will come to the treat & then sit down again.:0(

I will be watching this post to see what everyone has to say.
